Week of March 21, 2011

Monday, March 21, 2011 – AM: I woke up pretty early again, before 7:00am, and headed out to do a morning shakeout run on the golf course. It was a pretty perfect temperature, around 60F with the sun not yet above the tree-line. The golf course was clear and so I took off my shoes and ran around this one hole for a while in my bare feet. It felt really nice to run barefoot through the grass! I took it really easy, but felt a good bit better by the end. Afterwards, I came back to the house and had breakfast before jogging over to the tennis courts with the VC.

The total run was ~5.5M in 43:52.

AM2: I spent about 45 minutes playing tennis with the VC. The effort was pretty easy for most of it. At the end, I spent 10 or 15 minutes just hitting with Mr. C, which was a bit more intense. It was fun, though, and it didn’t seem to take too much out of me. On the way back, I stopped for a nice soak in the cold pool. I stayed in for about 15 minutes, which felt nice since it was already in the 70s.

PM: After lunch, I headed out for my second run of the day accompanied by Mrs. V on the bike. I don’t like to do two runs this close together, but I had made an appointment to get a sports massage in the afternoon and I didn’t want to run after that. So, we left around 12:30pm and headed towards South Beach.

I took it really easy again to try to make this a true recovery day. It was a nice winding route along the bike path through the woods. We got there and Mrs. V went inside to pick up some bike helmets and I jogged around the parking lot. We then headed back the same way we’d come.

My left knee was bugging me a good amount on the way back. The connection on the outside and almost on the back of my left knee was pretty tender. I think it is the connection site of the ITB or the hamstring with the back of the knee and the top of the calve. It was pretty frustrating and pretty sore. I had to stop once to try to stretch it out, but it didn’t seem to help too much. I think that like 40 minutes of barefoot running might have been a bit over-ambitious this morning, especially after 2 pretty hard days in a row.

Anyways, we came back through harbor town and then I did drills on the grass behind the condo.

The total run was 60:28 for 8.5M.

PM2: I got a massage after the run and was hoping that this would help with the tightness in my left knee area. The woman working on me was very solid in terms of applying enough pressure and really working the muscles well. She was also a bit of a loon – really into herbology and reflexology and that kind of stuff. Still, I think she really helped loosen up the ITB and that whole area. It felt a lot better by the time she was through.

After the massage, the rents picked me up and we went over to the driving range to hit some golf balls before dinner. I spent maybe 10 or 15 minutes whacking away and once I was satisfied, I headed into the fitness center to do the lift.

The fitness center was pretty decent and had machines and free weights to do everything except the horizontal pull-ups (there didn’t seem to be any bench press or anything to do that with). I did the Phase IV Lift. 3 sets of [12,10,8x bent over row @10lb freeweights, 10x incline DB press @ 10lb freeweights, 10x lateral raise @ 5lb freeweights, 8,6,6x hamstring curls @ 80lb, 30x bicycle crunch, 12,10,8x dynamic lunge, 10x Shoulder press @10lb free weight, 25x crunches].

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 - AM: I got a really good night’s sleep last night and woke up naturally after 8am, giving me over 10 hours. Very nice. I got up and had a pre-run breakfast of a pear and a piece of toast with jam and dried berries and some water. I then headed out to get my run in for the day. I had planned to do my intervals tomorrow morning, so I decided to try to get all of my mileage for the day in this morning so that I could take the afternoon to rest.

I started out with a lap of the golf course, wearing shoes this time. My knee felt pretty good at the start of the run and I was feeling decently confident about it. I then headed out along the bike path towards the nature preserve. This was a nice route because there’s a lot of long sections of grass under the high tension wires where I was able to run undisturbed. My knee started to bug me a bit after about 35 or 40 minutes. I was able to run through it pretty easily, though, and it didn’t seem to be altering my form.

I got back to the condo and jogged over to the golf course and was pleased to find that there was still no one on the course. So, I ran back and grabbed my spikes so I could do some drills and strides on the nice manicured grass. I felt pretty good doing full foot drills barefoot, so I put on my Tumbes spikes to do a few strides. I did 4 longer strides (20-30 sec) which felt quite good once I got into them. I took a long jog rest and felt good and quick. Nice to open up the stride a bit. The last one, I did it like the start of a cross country race: a standing start and then about 20 seconds hard and then settling into pace for 5-10 sec after that. It was fun on the rolling golf course hills. Don’t tell anyone that I was wearing spikes on their perfect grass!

Finally, I jogged back over to the tennis courts to meet up with the VC. I played about a minute or so, but that was really aggravating my knee, so I stopped quickly. I’m guessing it was a combination of that and all the barefoot running that got it so angry. I jogged over to the pool after but it was really sore, so it was more like a walk jog. Some soaking in the cold pool made it feel a good bit better. I took some ibuprofen when I got home and tried to rest it for the rest of the day.

The total run was 73:45 for 10M.

PM: After lunch, we sat in the sun for a while and then the rents dropped me off at a marina while they went to play golf. I rented a kayak and paddled around broad creek for about 2 hours. The effort was pretty easy. I would paddle for 10 or 20 minutes and then rest for a minute and just admire the scenery. After an hour or so, I stopped and had a little snack and read some of my book and just floated for a while. Then, it was time to paddle back (into the wind) which was a bit more difficult. Still, it was a really nice afternoon.

PM2: After a big dinner, I came home and did core – 100s, 50s, 30x squiggle, 30x flutter kick, 30x leg lift.

Wednesday, March 24, 2011 - AM: I woke up early for my big workout of the week. I’d been thinking about this workout for a while and, especially after Saturday’s race, I was pretty excited. I woke up and was still pretty bloated from a big dinner last night at Roast Fish and Corn bread. For breakfast, I had an orange and a bit of Gatorade.

We made the drive over to Hilton Head High School and checked out the track. Nobody was using it, but there was a maintenance crew cutting grass and trimming hedges. I figured they weren’t going to give us too much trouble, so we started warming up together. After a few minutes of easy jogging, Mr. C went to get the bike and try out his pacing responsibilities and I continued to warm up normally.

I jogged for about 25 minutes and then stopped and changed shoes (into my tumbes spikes). I then did full foot drills and some strides. I ran a couple of timed 100s to try to get the pace down and then 1x200m in 36.x, which felt harder than I had hoped.

The goal of the workout was 5x1600m at 5k pace (72-73s). I was hoping Mr. C would be able lead on the bike and I’d be able to sit behind him and let him break the wind and set the pace. By the time we were getting started, the wind had picked up a good amount and was already blowing steadily at 10-15mph down the back stretch.

We started off and were never really on pace. My basic plan had been to hit 72.x for each lap and that would probably have us average out around 4:50s. The first lap was 73.6 and it didn’t feel particularly easy. After that, it only got slower, with the last lap in 74.7 and 4:56.0 for the first rep. I figured that I just had to bust out some rust and it’d get better.

The next rep didn’t go much better. I came through the first lap in 72.6 and was feeling solid, but the next lap was 74 and then a 75. Another 74 brought it to 4:56.2. Now, I was starting to feel a bit worried. I took the 3:00 jog rest pretty easily and really tried to bring my focus back and not let myself get too negative.

The third mile was even worse. As much as I tried, I couldn’t seem to get anywhere near that gear that I have had in the last few workouts. I just felt like I was really struggling and running really slowly. The last mile was 73, 75, 76, 76 for 5:00. Yuck.

At that point, I said there’s no point in me coming out here and feeling like shit trying to run 10k pace. All that’s going to do is make me lose confidence about running 10k pace. I almost called the workout right there, but decided to try one more thing. I figured I’d try to run a few 800s and see if I could hit the pace on those. At least that way I’d still get some VO2 stimulus.

I ran one and came through in 71. 3 and was thinking ‘okay, just keep doing that.’ Still, the back stretch with the strong headwind seemed to kill me and I had slowed down to a 74 again.

It was clear that today was just not a good day to try and run fast. There are myriad factors, but mostly I was just listening to my body who was telling me that he was not ready for this today. It’s really frustrating to be in good shape and bomb a workout like this, especially when it’s 10 days out from my first collegiate track race. Still, I have faith in my fitness and one workout doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

I hate to make excuses, but I do think that the pollen may have been a huge problem, especially with the guys doing yard work. I found myself breathing much more rapidly than usual and really straining. More importantly, I think I just wasn’t recovered from this past weekend. I ran a hard 8km race on Saturday night and then ran 20M at 6:20 pace less than 24 hours later. This may have been overly ambitious.

After the run, I did a longer cool down, first with Mr. C then solo. Total about 4M.

Splits

4:56.0 (73.6, 73.8, 73.9, 74.7)

4:56.2 (72.6,74.2, 75.3, 74.0)

5:00.7 (73.5, 75.1, 76.1, 76.1)

2:25.4 (71.3, 74.1)

AM2: Once back at the house, I biked over to the grocery store to pick up some lunch food. It was nice out, but the pollen was so thick in the air that you could see it blowing around like dust. I spent most of the ride with my hand holding my shirt over my nose and mouth. Overall, it was about 40 minutes round trip at a nice easy pace.

PM: After lunch, I was feeling really wiped out and took a nap. I woke up too early, since I had promised Mr. C I’d go play 9 holes of golf with him. I was feeling really groggy and like I could have slept for another hour or so – and I probably should have.

It ended up being okay. It was super slow moving and really hot out, so it was a bit frustrating at first. I think I was also just a bit overtired, so having to sit and wait for every shot gave me a lot of opportunities to put my feet up and rest. I ended up feeling much better by the end. All in all, it ended up being pretty fun.

Once we got back to the condo, I jogged down to the pool and did a 30 minute shakeout pool run. This actually felt really good. It was good to work the muscles in a slightly different way. The only problem was that the sun had already passed the deep part of the pool and so it was actually a bit chilly. Still it was a nice shakeout.

PM2: After a tasty dinner at Red Fish, I did Core 100s, 50s, 30x side dip, 30x squiggle, 2:00 plank, 30x toes to sky, 50x leg lift

Thursday, March 24, 2011 - AM: I forced myself to sleep in a bit and didn’t wake up until after 8:30am. I had a small pre-run breakfast (just a pear and a few sips of Gatorade) and then headed out for my easier/shorter long run. This was to be the last long run before Princeton next week. Since the race is on a Friday, I figured that doing a normal long run on Sunday was a bit close for comfort. So, instead, I did this longer run today and I may do something light but a little longer on Monday or tues (10-12M steady).

I was hoping to have some company on the bikes for this, but given that it was our last day here and we all wanted to get a lot done, it seemed to be most efficient for me to just go by myself while the rents were at tennis. I was a bit worried about the heat and not having fluids with me, but I seemed to manage okay.

I felt a bit sluggish at first and took the first 3M very easy at ~7:00 pace. From there, it picked up a good bit for the next 8-10M. I actually felt really good around 7-12M, nice and smooth and relaxed. Around 12M, though, my knee started to act up again. I stopped to stretch it , but it didn’t seem to do too much. I think it’s all of the running on sloped shoulders and narrow, twisty bike paths that’s been getting my ITB aggravated. Who knows though…

I slowed down the pace a bit at the end but managed to make it back. Once back, I did a bit of jogging on the grass before doing barefoot drills and 2x long strides (~30 seconds each). These felt pretty decent considering they were at the end of a long run. Finally, I jogged back to the condo for some stretching and fuel.

The total run was 16M+ in 1:50:15 (6:52 pace).

PM: We had a nice tasty lunch at the Quarter deck and then I came back and had an excellent nap. Once I woke up, we decided to bike down to the beach and go for a walk since it was so nice out. Round-trip, the biking took about 30 minutes. The pace was VERY easy, since Mrs. V’s biking pace is similar to my moderate running pace.

Once we got there, we walked for about an hour, out and back. It was a beautiful day; the only problem was crazy strong winds which nearly blew me over a few times and whipped sand against your skin. Still, overall it was very pleasant and nice to hang with the rents.

PM2: Once we got back from the beach, Mr. C and I headed down to hit some golf balls and use the gym. I did a 6min warm up on the elliptical machine there and then did the Lift Phase III (3 sets of [dips (30-37), 10x bent over row @10lb free weight, 10x push up, 10x bicep curl @ 10lb free weight, 8x RDL each foot, 8x quad extension @80-90lb, 20x side crunches, 15x shooters, 15x suitcases, 20x lunge walk]. I felt a little less stable on the RDLs than I have. Tried to focus on balance. Lunge walk felt good though.

After the lift, I spent about 30 minutes at driving range thwacking away. I think I did all right given that I’ve only played golf a couple of times in the last year.

Friday, March 25, 2011 – AM: I woke up naturally around 7:30am and felt a bit stuffy. I’m hoping it’s just my allergies flaring up with all the pollen down here and not that I’m coming down with a cold or something. I got myself out of bed and dressed and then waited for Mr. C to get ready before heading out for a very easy shakeout with him.

We left the condo around 8am and ran mostly around the 18th hole of the golf course. It was a good bit cooler – about 60F – which felt nice. We ran on the grass for 15 minutes or so and then ran down a couple of other holes and then came back the same way. He stopped after about 30 minutes and then I jogged out towards the main road and back to tack on another 2+ miles. I felt okay – still a bit just generally tired. I’m hoping that a real easy day today with less time on my feet will let me feel good tomorrow. Ideally, I’d like to do the 4x16 workout tomorrow, but If I’m still not feeling great, I may push it back to Sunday.

The total run this morning was 47:18 for 6M.

PM: Our first flight was uneventful and we had a pretty long lay-over in Charlotte, so I decided to get my second run in around the airport instead of waiting until I got home and running in the cold, Concord night. It was pretty fun actually. I got to weave in and out of tourists and business men and explore the whole airport – which is a lot smaller once you’re moving at a decent clip. It was a lot nicer than my run in the Quito airport last summer because my parents watched my stuff, so I didn’t have to stay in constant view of my bags.

I had some food after this and then we headed down to our gate to get on the plane for (chilly!) Boston. I’m really not too excited to be headed back to New England. This vacation felt a bit too rushed.

It will be nice to get back into the routine though. Variety may be the spice of life, but consistency is the base of success!

The total run was 33:00 for 4M+.

PM: Finally made it home safely! I got home and did some unpacking and then got in a quick shakeout with core. I did a 6 minute warm up on the elliptical machine and then did core – 100s, 50s, 30x toes to sky, 30x back bridge, 30x Kenyan, 50x leg lift. After, did 10 minute cool-down on elliptical. Feeling good. I think I’ll try the workout tomorrow afternoon.

Saturday, March 26, 2011 – AM: I slept like a baby last night for close to 11 hours. I woke up at 9:30am – the latest I have slept in a VERY long time – probably thanks to leaving my shades down. I felt pretty good and decided to go get in a little shake out before my workout this afternoon.

I left around 9:45am and it was pretty cool – only about 30F. I did a bit of very easy running and then did full foot drills on the grass in front of my house. Yes; you can finally see the grass in our yard! Though, today it was mostly frozen… Anyways, I felt pretty good doing that. I did one quick stride on HPC and then came back in and rolled out before having breakfast.

PM: I had a big breakfast after my shakeout this morning and then sat down and did a bunch of work on my thermo studying. I’m a little anxious about that since we have a mid-term on Tuesday and unfortunately, I left all my notes and materials at school… Oops!

Anyways, I had a small lunch around noon (a pear and a bowl of apple sauce with berries and cereal) and then did some more work. Around 2:00pm, I had a chewy bar and drove into town to do my mile repeats (take two). I was feeling pretty decent by now; I had been a bit groggy in the morning, but that was probably just from sleeping late.

I parked by the track and I noticed the flag was already blowing pretty steadily. The weather said it was a steady 15mph wind with gusts at 30mph. I had 2 chocolate espresso beans and then headed out for my warm up. It was cool, but not too cold, ~35F, but I didn’t feel the wind too badly on my warm up. I ran out the trail behind Concord Lumber towards Great Meadows and so it was pretty sheltered. By the time I got back to Emerson, I definitely started to notice the wind on the big exposed field.

I grabbed my Tumbes spikes from the car and then jogged over to the track to change. The warm-up was about 28 minutes, before I put my spikes on and did full foot drills. I followed these with a few regular strides and then a 200m at goal pace, which was fast (~34). 36 pace felt a good bit slower – this is what I had expected to feel on Wednesday when 36s felt more like 33s. I did a couple more fast strides after this and then got ready to go.

I wasn’t really sure how to dress and since most of my warm clothes were at school, I ended up just wearing half-tights, calve socks, a cotton long sleeve shirt, and a hat and gloves.

The first rep went out well. The wind was a bit weird because the steady wind was across the track, so I never really felt like I was fully into the wind or had a full tail-wind. The steady wind wasn’t too bad, though, it was the very strong gusts that would flare up that were the real problem. This made my splits kind of go wild as sometimes I would turn past the finish and head onto the back straight and I’d be blasted by a 20-30mph wind. This is why my second lap on this first rep was a significantly slower (74.1).

Anyways, I came through in 2:26.7 and then closed in 2:24.7 for 4:51.4. The effort felt about the same on every lap, though, the wind just made that second one about 2 seconds slow.

The 3:00 jog felt good and long and I covered about 500m. The second rep was similar, with all of the laps around 72.x except for one slower lap where the wind was gusting. Still, negative split again 2:25.9, 2:24.5 for a 4:50.4.

Again, the 3:00 jog felt plenty long – probably could have gone with 2:30. On this rest, the wind was really whipping and didn’t seem to subside. As I started the third rep, I tried to just keep the effort consistent. This ended up being 73.x and I was even as slow as 75.x on the third lap. The wind was bad enough, though, that this honestly felt like the same effort as the 72.x from the first two reps. If anything, I felt like I was working a bit harder (which may have just been because it was later in the workout).

Finally, I took the last 3:00 jog and hoped for the whipping winds to calm down. They didn’t, so I just set off. I tried to run pretty hard on the last rep and went out in 72.2 which felt more like 69.2 given the wind. I slowed down a ton on the second lap but managed to pull it together a bit to run the last two laps in 73.5, 71.9 (pretty hard effort). This was the slowest rep in 4:52.7.

After this last mile, I jogged across the infield and took about 2:00 easy jog before doing 2x200m. I ran the first in 29.6, took another easy 2:00 jog and then ran the second around 28.mid (I missed hitting my watch).

Finally, I changed back into my trainers and did a nice cool-down around Concord Center. I had had some stomach cramps during the last interval or two and they were pretty bad on the cool-down. I stopped in Starbuck’s and had some nasty diarrhea; felt a lot better afterwards. The cool-down was about 25 minutes easy.

Overall, I felt pretty solid about this workout. I was running by myself and in very nasty wind and I didn’t let myself get psyched out by a couple of random slow laps. I just felt a whole lot better this afternoon than I did on Wednesday. I’m not sure if it was the pollen or the heat or simply not being recovered from a tough weekend (probably the most likely), but I was clearly just not ready for this workout on Wednesday. It’s a bummer that I had to bomb the workout the first time around and only did 4x16 this time, but I’m feeling a lot more confident now. It’s said that the pace you can average for this workout (4x16 w/ 3:00 jog) is the pace you can run for a 5000m. So, 4:51.6 average would be about 15:11 for 5000m. Especially given that I was alone and it was really windy, I think that this is pretty feasible. I’m hoping that this means that given another month or so and a bit more focus on speed I should have a shot at a 15:0x or even 14:5x.

As a comparison, I ran a similar workout to this (5x1600 with 3:00 jog) back in November and averaged 4:52.5.

I’m pretty excited for the coming race. I’m feeling confident now and am just beginning to feel well rested. This will be my last full effort until Friday. I’ll do a very easy shorter long run tomorrow with the CSU guys and then maybe something with a bit of turn-over on Monday or Tuesday. Mostly, just easy and moderate running with some strides here and there. Hopefully, that’ll have me feeling good and fresh come Friday. I’ve just got to make sure I continue to get the sleep and nutrition right and everything should be in place for a good one.

Splits:

28min warm-up

4:51.4 (72.6, 74.1, 72.3, 72.4)

4:50.4 (72.3, 73.6, 72.6, 71.8)

4:51.9 (73.6, 73.6, 74.3, 71.9)

4:52.7 (72.2, 75.1, 73.5, 71.9)

Average: 4:51.6

Sunday, March 27, 2011 – Last night, I went into the city to see Jeff Beck play at the Wang Center. It was pretty great and we had awesome seats, but I was pretty tired, so I was barely awake by the end of it. Luckily, it was an older crowd, so everyone was sitting down and it was over pretty early. I slept in the car on the way home and fell right asleep when we got back.

I woke up at 8am to head into Newton to do a very easy medium distance run with the CSU gang. I was excited to see Jon and talk to him since I haven’t had too much contact with him since his health scare a month or so ago. I got a bit lost on the way there, but managed to get there right around 9am and luckily my group hadn’t left yet.

I ran with Jon, Terry, Jonathan Wyner, and Kevin. I don’t really know the area, so I can describe the route too well. We started out kind of cutting through Newton, I think, for about 30 minutes, at which point Jon turned around and headed back by himself. The four of us continued up a very steep hill and then through a park down the other side.

We then ran through some more suburban areas until finally getting back to an area I recognized along the long aqueduct trail which we would take from Cold Springs over the summer. We took that almost all the way back to cold springs but turned down Quinnabaquinn Rd and then looped around back towards Henry’s house where we had started. We dropped Jonathan off there after about 80 minutes and headed back out to finish up.

We then ran out to Comm ave to join all the Sunday morning marathon runners. It was amazing how many people were running along Comm Ave – quite inspiring actually. It was the first spark that always starts a fire under my ass come springtime when I get the serious marathon fever. Having Boston, London, Rotterdam and others all right in a row just gets me so amped up to get out there and tackle the roads. It takes a lot of restraint not to just bandit Boston every year.

Anyways, we finally got back to Henry’s house after 1hr 47 minutes of running. We were going very slowly the whole time (7:00-30 I’d guess) and so I doubt it was much more than 14-14.5. We came inside and had some tasty snacks and did a bit of stretching. I had a nice chat with Jon about a whole host of things – he was infinitely helpful as always. I headed home around 11:45 and then had a nice lunch with the rents before heading back to school. Spring break is far too short… I’m ready for summer.

The total run was 14M++ in 1:47:12.

PM: I had a remarkably unproductive afternoon. I continuously tried to sit down and study my thermo but just couldn’t bring myself to focus. I think I’m just a little tired.

I had planned to do an easy shake out on the elliptical or bike and so I jogged over to Gantcher around 4pm. Much to my dismay, the gym was closed. So, I jogged back to Lewis and just did a slightly longer session of core which took about 20 minutes. It was… Core – 100s, 50s, 30x squiggle, 30x side dip, 2:30 plank, 30x Kenyan, 1:00 side plank, 50x reach up, 50x leg lift.

Total for the week: 86 miles in 9 runs

Week of March 14, 2011

El levantamiento era: 3 x [12,10,8x seated row @40lb, 10x incline DB press @ 10lb freeweights, 10x lateral raise @ 5lb freeweights, 12,10,8x horizontal pull ups, 8,6,6x hamstring curls @ 80lb, 30x bicycle crunch, 12,10,8x dynamic lunge, 8x leg press @90lb, 10x Shoulder press @10lb free weight, 30x crunches].

El tiempo total fue de 1:14:21 para 10 millas+++ (10.25M en 69 minutos – ~6:45 promedio).

Entonces, fuimos juntos – yo, Nick, y Matt.

Finalmente, yo cambie mis zapatos otra vez (a mis Tumbes clavos) y corrí 2x200m.

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 - AM: I slept pretty soundly and woke up to my alarm at 7:30am. I contemplated sleeping in and skipping class and hit the snooze button for a while, but eventually dragged my ass out of bed and got moving. I really layered up this morning. I wore my warmest thermal tights with sweatpants over them. On top, I wore an under armor spandex top, a cotton long sleeve, my insulated windbreaker and a cotton sweatshirt. I also had on my warmest mittens, neck warmer, and two hats.

I jogged down to Baronian and did my run on the grass there. I had hoped to do it on the big field behind the track, but I couldn’t figure out how to get there. So, I just ran around the infield. Needless to say, I was pretty hot. I practiced speaking in Spanish aloud while running and probably looked like a mumbling crazy person to an external viewer. Anyways, I switched directions at the halfway and then headed back to Lewis. The total run was 32:25 for 4M+, mostly on grass.

PM: I headed to Gantcher after EMID and did about a mile before practice. I met up with Dan who was planning to run about 12M. I had planned to do 10-12M, and so I figured I’d at least start with him and then possibly cut short if I wanted to head back early. Dan had some specific route in mind which he claimed would be about 12M or maybe even short. I figured if it was more like 11M, that’d be perfect for me, anyways, so I foolishly agreed and we trundled off towards the river.

I had gone pretty far overboard in terms of over-dressing again. I was wearing my thermal tights under a pair of insulated wind pants. On top, I had an under-armor top, a cotton long sleeve, my TUXC pull-over, and an insulated wind breaker. All this with my warm mittens, neck warmer, and two hats. The temperature was probably in the mid 40s, close to 50F once it started to clear a bit. I was really hot really quickly.

We ran the usual route through Davis to Harvard and the river. We crossed and ran as we usually would along the river path. After passing the BU bridge, we crossed over storrow drive and headed into Boston. We reached this point in about 32min for a bit over 5M.

Once on the other side of Storrow drive, we ran up a smaller side street and then cut over to whatever street is that big divided one that runs parallel to storrow drive towards the Common. We ran through the middle of the divided street which had a bunch of grass to run on, so that was pretty nice. I was already feeling pretty pooped at this point, though, and I think I had begun to realize that it was going to be significantly longer than I had hoped. I was seriously overheating and sweating a lot, which was a serious double-whammy. First off, my body wasn’t used to having to work so hard in such warm conditions. To make matters worse, All of my sweat had totally soaked all of my layers by this point, and I was probably wearing upwards of 10 lbs worth of clothing.

Anyways, I was feeling pretty pooped by the time we got to the Common and it was clear that Dan was feeling a lot better. I was struggling pretty hard to keep up with him at that point. I don’t think I was actually all that tired from yesterday, or anything, since I had felt pretty good at the beginning. I think it mostly had to do with overheating and the fact that it felt like I was running in chain male.

Once we got around the common and back out to the river, I realized that we were going to be way over the 10-12 that I had initially planned. So, I really cut back the gas and took it really easy for a while. Judging by the overall pacing, we must have been running pretty quickly through Boston and I would guess that we slowed down to around 7:00 pace on the river. We jogged easily together until we hit the mass ave bridge and then followed mass ave all the way back to Harvard. I had told Murner that he was welcome to go off because I knew he had a lot more energy than I did, and I was glad that he did.

The last 2M+ I ran really slowly, probably close to 8:00 pace, since I knew it was going to be close to 15M. I basically tried to treat it like a cool down. This ended up working out all right and I got back in one piece.

All of my clothes were soaking wet, so I grabbed a big plastic garbage bag and just threw everything in there. Lifting this bag up, I could tell it probably weighed 15lbs or so, maybe even more. Jesus. This was the one day that I forgot to bring a Gatorade to practice, so I drank a lot of water before heading to Dewick (for Beach Night!). I spent most of the rest of the day re-hydrating and refueling. I don’t think I drank enough because I would wake up in the night with a really nasty headache. Ow!

I also had my Spanish Language interview with Strive a few hours after that run. I tried to get as much sugar in me as I could to give me some energy and make my brain wake up, but I was still feeling a bit foggy. So, I ate a couple of choc. Espresso beans and that seemed to help. (The interview went really well, by the way! She said she heard “a sense of comfort and relaxation with the language” and said she would give her recommendation for me to the Strive people. So, now it’s just the waiting game. I’ve made it pretty far at this point, but they do only accept one person for this position, so it’s a small-number-statistics problem. It’s pretty unpredictable. )

Anyways, the total run was 15M+ in 1:45:35 (14.5M with Dan in 1:39:18, 6:51 avg).

Thursday, March 17, 2011 – AM: I slept really badly last night. I was totally exhausted but just could not fall asleep. I had two chocolate espresso beans to give me a bit of perk before my Spanish interview at 8:30pm and I think that that must have been what did it. Either way, I woke up around 8:30am and surprisingly didn’t feel too terrible. I got dressed and jogged over to Gantcher.

Once there, I did the Phase III Lift in the varsity side of the gym. The lift was 3 sets of [dips (30-35), 10x seated row @40lb, 10x push up, 7x chin up, 8x RDL each foot, 20x side crunches, 15x shooters, 15x suitcases, 10x lunge walk]. I did half of the reps on the lunges and cut out the leg press/quad extension to let my thighs rest a bit. Everything felt fine though.

AM2: After the lift, I did a quick easy 15 min cool down on the stationary bike. I was pretty well layered and so I was pretty hot for this. Felt good though. Kept it short after yesterday, just wanted to shake out the legs. Afterwards, jogged back to Lewis.

PM: Today was an amazingly beautiful day! It was close to 60F all day and not a cloud in the sky. I had my first real ME lab this afternoon, which ended up taking a long time, so I wasn’t heading to Gantcher until like 4:00pm. I got there and was happy to find that Brosh had also just gotten in from class and hadn’t run yet. After a bit of discussion and talking to some of the guys who had just run, we decided to head towards the fells for the first time this year.

I wore a lot of layers again in hoping to get some last minute adjustment to overheating. It was a little ridiculous, especially while running with Brosh in just shorts and no shirt, but oh well. We had a really nice run and it was great to get back in the Fells. It was really beautiful there; there’s even still a bit of ice on the water. Very cool.

Anyways, we ran super slow and easy, which was just what I wanted. A good friendly conversational run. Afterwards, we tacked on some extra on alumni fields and then headed inside.

I did full barefoot drills on the blue mats and then headed to Dewick for my last Dewick dinner before Spring Break!

The total run was ~76min for 10M+.

Friday, March 18, 2011 – AM: I was not a happy camper when my alarm went off at 5:40 this morning. I consider myself a morning person, but this was a little too much morning, even for me. I was hoping to get a normal morning shakeout run in before we spent most of the day sitting in airports and on airplanes on the way to Hilton Head.

It was pitch black outside still and I thought it would be really cold, so I was considering just running on my parents’ old beat-up treadmill. But, my mom told me that it was already like 50F outside, so I decided to just layer up and head out. I didn’t overdress too much, mostly because I was rushed. I wore sweatpants, an underarmor top, and a sweat shirt, along with two hats and mittens. I took a flash light since my headlamp was packed somewhere. I headed out right around 6am, as planned.

It was very quiet and dark in the neighborhood at 6:00 on Friday morning. Most houses weren’t showing signs of life yet; I only saw one car. I ran the long way out to 62 and then turned around. I didn’t feel like running along the busy street without better reflective gear. I retraced my steps and then added on a bit on the border road loop. This brought be back just in time, a bit after 6:30am.

From there, I snagged an orange and then took a very fast shower before getting dressed and doing my last minute packing. I packed up some snacks and then hauled stuff downstairs and loaded up the car to get to the airport.

So far, travel has been pretty calm. No traffic to speak of on the way in and the airport wasn’t too crowded. I got a yogurt parfait for breakfast and now I’m probably going to take a nap. We connect in Charlotte, NC and then fly to Hilton Head. I think we should be there by mid afternoon. I’ll probably do my second run around 6pm to see what that’s like for the race tomorrow (gun at 6:15pm).

Anyways, the total run for this morning was ~30min for ~4M. I didn’t have a watch on it.

PM: We got here without too much trouble, checked into our place and were here by about 3:00pm. We took a quick trip to the grocery store to get some basic food to have in the condo and also stopped by a triathlon-specialty store, which had been recommended to me by a guy on the plane. The guys there were very friendly and had lots of good advice about where to run and specifically how to get to use the local track.

There was only one minor crisis during the afternoon. Within only a few hours of being on vacation, I was hit by a car. Yes, that was a little bit of an exaggeration… While we were in the parking lot of the grocery store, Mr. C shut his car door and the far edge of the door clipped me right on my hip-bone. It hurt really badly at that instant and I was buckled over for a minute or so. I got a big, nasty welt and would feel it walking around for the rest of the day.

After we got back, I took a bit of time to relax and then did core – 100s, 50s, 30x side dip, 30x super man, 50x leg lift, before heading out to run.

We left the house around 6pm and it was still very bright out and about 75F. The VC came with me on their bikes and we did a nice easy out/back from the house. The paths around here are pretty nice for running. They’re all paved but there is usually grass or dirt to run in next to the pavement. It’s also pretty shady so the heat didn’t feel too bad.

Anyways, we did 40 minutes out and back. It was a bit slow at first, but I actually felt really good by the end. I jogged over to the golf course afterwards to see if I could get some barefoot drills or strides in, but it was pretty packed. I did a couple of easy strides on the side in the grass and then jogged back to the house.

The total run was 42:07 for 6M.

Saturday, March 19, 2011 – AM: I slept pretty well last night but woke up around 6:15am for some reason and had trouble falling back asleep. My hip was bugging me a lot when I walked to the bathroom, so that may have had something to do with it. I stayed in bed and got a bit more sleep until I got up around 7:20am to watch what I thought would be the webcast of the NYC half marathon. Stupidly, I had mis-read the website and it turns out that the half is tomorrow (Sunday). Oops!

I was already up and out of bed at that point, though, so I decided to head out and do what I had planned as a little shake out on the golf course – really just an elaborate warm-up. I jogged out the back door to the golf course, which wasn’t opened yet, so there was no one playing. I took off my shoes and socks and jogged around for a couple of minutes before doing full barefoot foot drills. It felt great to run through the beautifully manicured fairway grass in bare feet. After doing drills, I jogged up and down this one hole a couple of times, finishing with one longer surge, not even up to stride speed. It all felt good.

The hip didn’t bug me too much. I felt it on pretty much every step, but it didn’t seem to be altering my stride, so I wasn’t too worried. The only thing that seemed tight or sore, surprisingly was my hamstrings, which I felt while doing Frankensteins. Just a bit tighter than usual. Once I jogged back to the condo, I did some dynamic stretching to try to loosen it up and then some rolling with the stick. Finally, I did some static stretching and it felt a good bit better.

I didn’t time the run or anything; it was probably only about a mile in total.

PM: I had a pretty low-key day today. After my morning shakeout, I had a very large breakfast and then spent the rest of the morning just relaxing, working on some random projects that I’ve been wanting to start for a while and resting. My hamstrings felt pretty tight the whole time, so I spent a good bit of time trying to stretch and roll them out. I couldn’t get them too well with the stick, but I found that my nalgene made a good substitute for the roller.

Anyways, I had a big lunch with my parents around noon – pasta, salad, fruit, some cookies. After this, I pretty much switched to all liquid for the rest of the afternoon. The gun was at 6:15pm and I didn’t want to have much solid food in me at that point because of the heat. So, I was just slowly sipping Gatorade and water for most of the afternoon. This seemed to work well. I did spend a ton of time peeing, though, haha.

We left the condo around 4:00pm to make the hour or so drive to Beaufort for the race. The thermometer in the car read 86F when we left and was down to about 79F by the time we got to Beaufort around 5pm. It was still quite sunny though at 5pm, though, so it felt pretty hot.

We parked in a big field and then walked into the main drag to pick up my number and get situated. The race center was a thriving bee’s nest of activity. One little street was crowded with vendors selling food, face paint, shirts, and more. I picked up my number and we parked ourselves on a little picnic bench to take stock of the timing and use the port-a-potty. The gun was at 6:15pm, so I figured I would start my warm-up around 5:30-35. This ended up being about right – maybe even a bit early.

I had brought a big zip-lock baggie full of ice and before I left for my warm-up, I put 3 or 4 ice cubes under my hat to melt onto my head to try and stay cool. It worked okay while standing around, but once I started running, the ice cubes had a hard time staying in my hat. I left right as the winners of the 5km race were coming through in a blazing 19:4x. I ran around the course, darting in and out of the 5k walk/joggers, and trying to get a feel for the course. A good portion was relatively shaded, which was a blessing, but there were also a lot of turns, several of which were pretty sharp 180 degree hairpins. There was also a pretty exposed section right down on the water where the wind was pretty strong and in your face. I figured this would be a place to tuck in and work. The nice thing was that the course was very flat, with only a few little bumps here and there.

Anyways, I ran for 25minutes and then came back and peed again before taking some water and trying to cool myself down some more. I soaked my hair and kept some ice cubes under my arm-pits for a few minutes before we moved shop from our picnic table to the spot where my parents could watch the race over near the start. Once there, I changed into my singlet and Peer flats (no socks) and started to do some drills on the grass. I realized about half-way through that I was going to be a bit ahead of schedule, so I took my time and jogged over to a couple of the faster looking guys.

I introduced myself and asked what they were hoping to run. One guy said “I’d be happy to break 28 minutes.” Another told me that he was hoping to run under 27, or around 5:20 pace. I told them that I was hoping to run around 5:20 pace as well (mostly because I didn’t want to seem like a cocky bastard), but it was starting to sound like this would be a solo effort – which, by the way, was really surprising, given that there was $250 for first place on the line…

I did a few strides starting around 10 minutes before the gun. People were lining up super early, but I pretty much ignored all their calls to the start since they said it would start at 6:15. Finally, they had someone sing the national anthem and I took one last pee before striding back to the line. The temperature was ~75F.

I got a good spot on the right side of the front of the line. From there, I would run a diagonal to the first sharp left-hand turn about 200m into the race. We all stood and waited for the command and then finally, an air horn sounded the start of the race.

I had told myself that this wasn’t cross country and there wasn’t really anyone to run against, so there was no point in sprinting the first 200-400m. Still, I found myself a little over-excited and running away from the field within the first straightaway. From there, I would never see anyone for the rest of the race. Luckily, there was a lead car or else I would have had a hard time following the winding course.

For most of the first mile, I heard foot-steps somewhat close behind me. I thought that I might actually have some company at some point, but it was clearly just people running above their ability levels (after the race, most of the faster guys I talked to said they ran much slower than they had hoped, probably do to me rabbiting them out a good bit faster than they had hoped through the first mile or so of the race.

I went into this race without any clear expectations. I wanted it to be a good, hard effort, but time-wise, I didn’t have too much in mind. It seemed like a lot of things were conspiring against the race going well – the heat, the wind, all the sharp turns on the course, the extra long run on Wednesday, the pain in my hip from the car-door incident. I think that I figured if everything went really well, I might be able to pull out a PR (<25:58). Mostly, I just wanted to run consistently, not blow up, and hopefully negative or at least evenly split.

As the 1M marker came into view, the clock next to it read 4:4x. I had a little bit of a panic attack, but it was farther away than I realized and so I passed the mile in 5:05. At that point, there was a turn and I could see that I already had a pretty big gap on the rest of the field. A pack of 5 or 6 guys was behind me by a solid margin. By then, I realized I would have no one to push me and it would just be me against the clock.

The course headed down towards the water and then a hairpin turn brought us back up towards the race nucleus. We passed by the first water stop and I grabbed a cup of water and tossed it on my head. My long hair actually worked pretty well as a cooling sponge. I had soaked it before the race and so between that and the re-soaking at each water stop, it actually acted as a nice coolant.

I passed the 2M mark in 10:08, so 5:03 for the second mile. I honestly expected it to be more like 5:10. The effort felt similar to the first mile, but I figured with the fast start, that must have been good for a few seconds fast. I then followed my friends in the pickup truck back up towards the race nucleus and then another hairpin turn along a divided street to run back down to the water. I could see that the rest of the field was well behind me here, as they were right on the other side of the median. I also got to wave hello to my parents which was nice. The third mile had the first longer stretch down on the water, which slowed things down a bit as the wind was pretty strong. We then made a right turn and headed back up towards the race center again.

3M were passed in 15:18 (5:10 3rd mile). The effort felt the same, but with the wind and hair pin turn, I figured it’d be a bit slower. Once through this 3rd mile, I knew that I was into the hardest stretch of the race, mentally at least. I tried to up the intensity and figured this would help me maintain pace. The course did one more hairpin up by the race center and then headed down to the water for the last time. This was the longest stretch on the water and the toughest in terms of wind. There were a couple more sharp turns before I passed 4M in 20:28 (5:09 split).

After this, there was a final turn around as I headed back towards the finish line. I passed by the last water-stop and didn’t even bother stopping. I tried to actively “switch gears” every minute or so. As I made one last turn towards home, someone shouted “only a half mile to go!” I looked at my watch and it said 3:00, so I figured that meant there were actually only about 600m left. I started to really pick it up and started to get some crowd support.

I had a lot of fun with the last 400m. I tried to kick it in pretty hard and I was trying to get the crowd into it. It was a lot of fun and I was feeling great. I knew that I was on track to set a big PR and get the win and I just really wanted to enjoy the moment. The crowd was great and loud and I felt awesome crossing the line and then hit my watch a few seconds later for 25:32 (FAT: 25:29, 5:01 last mile).

I jogged over and gave my parents a big hug. I was really, really pleased with this effort. I felt great during the race, both physically and mentally. I felt like a totally different runner than I did a couple of months ago.

I ate a cliff bar and had some water and then jogged the last two miles of the course very easily (no time). After this, I kind of walked around in a stupor while trying to re-hydrate and not pass out. After taking in probably a half liter or so of water and Gatorade, I started to feel a bit better. I did some stretching in the grass and then went and found the race director before the awards ceremony. I told them I was a collegian and wanted to donate my winnings to their charity (a local charter school). They were pretty psyched, so it was nice to make their day.

We stuck around for the awards ceremony and then grabbed dinner at a local pub. The owner was there and was very excited to find out that I had won the race. I even got a free meal out of it!

We drove back after that and I promptly fell asleep in the car. I came home and passed out around 10:00pm. Long day.

Overall, this was a really great effort and I felt awesome about it. I felt like there were a lot of reasons that this race could have poorly and I still ended up running what was an almost 30 second PR on a course that was definitely slower than long lakes – and I was entirely alone. I felt like I definitely could have run another 2km out there and that would have been a 31:50. On a track, with competition and pacing and 20 degrees cooler, I think that that time is definitely doable. I’m really looking forward to Princeton.

11M total for the day.

Sunday, March 20, 2011 – AM: I woke up naturally pretty early again. I was a bit stiff, but nothing too bad. I had a nice big breakfast and then biked over to play some tennis with the VC. It was pretty fun and I actually did surprisingly decently given that I was pretty tired and I hadn’t played tennis in a long time. I ended up playing for about 30 minutes. I didn’t want to go too long as I had planned to do my long run in the afternoon. It was a pretty easy effort and didn’t really take too much out of me.

AM2: I did full barefoot drills in some grass by the tennis center while the rents were still playing a bit. After this, I did core on the grass – 100s, 50s, 30x side dip, 90 sec plank, 90 sec side plank, 50x leg lift. Felt solid and it was nice to be outside in the warm sun.

I then walked over to the pool and soaked my legs in the very cool water for about 10-15 minutes before biking back to the condo for lunch.

PM: I was pretty exhausted after lunch and ended up taking a (somewhat involuntary) nap on the couch. I was feeling a bit better after that, so I decided to get up and go get my long-run done. It was cooler today (only in the upper 60s), so I wasn’t too worried about the heat. Mr. C was coming along with fluids, anyways, so I figured it’d be all good.

We left around 3pm and headed out on a looping course that stayed entirely on the bike trails. The course was made up of two big loops which went out of sea pines and then one smaller loop at the end to round up the mileage. I had mapped out the route on the roads and the bike paths are a bit windey alongside the roads, so it was probably a bit longer than it mapped out. Still, it mapped out to 20M even, so I knew it would be at least 20.

I felt surprisingly decent at first. I used the first 3M to get into it (I had remembered a where a few splits were in the course so I could tell what the pace was like) and from there was feeling pretty good. The first 3M were in 19:49 and the second were in 18:33. It was really windy along the ocean, so that took a good bit of energy to counter, but other than that it was a nice loop. After the 18:33, I actively slowed myself down because I didn’t want to be running that fast today. The rest of the run was between 6:20 6:30 pace, which felt good and comfortable.

I was feeling pretty good until about 13-14M. I took Gatorade at 6, 9, 12, and 15M, which seemed to help, but I definitely got to that glycogen depleted state a lot earlier than usual on long runs. As I said to Mr. C at the time, I didn’t feel much worse than I usually feel on long runs, I just started feeling it earlier. 14-15M felt more like 18-19M.

And so, the last few miles were pretty tough. I was pretty pooped by the end but managed to close the last mile in 5:53. I think that was mostly out of desire to get home and cool off and drink and eat.

Once I got inside, I noticed I was having some trouble breathing. Not sure if I’ve mentioned this yet, but there is an enormous amount of pollen on EVERYTHING. I used to have really terrible allergies, which have been getting better over the last few years. I think that running for 2+ hrs outside might have been enough to get my lungs a bit upset with all the pollen in the air. I took a cold shower to try to get as much pollen off of me as I could. I ended up feeling better pretty soon after.

The total run was 20M in 2:07:25 (6:22 pace)

Splits:

3M: 19:49 (6:36 pace)

6M: 38:23 (18:33 – 6:11 pace)

9M: 57:19 (18:56 – 6:19 pace)

12M: 1:16:19 (19:00 – 6:20 pace)

13.1M: 1:23:59 (7:14 – 6:29 pace)

16.2M: 1:43:37 (19:37 – 6:20 pace)

19M: 2:01:32 (17:55, 6:24 pace)

20M: 2:07:25 (5:53 pace)

Week of March 7, 2011

Monday, March 07, 2011 – AM: I woke up around 7:00am and didn’t sleep too well. My legs were pretty sore from yesterday and I was having a hard time getting comfortable. I also realized that I lost my cell phone last night (I was pretty sure I’d left it in the weight room at Gantcher), so I think that was making me anxious. Anyways, I woke up and decided to head out and get my morning workout in and see if I could find my phone.

I jogged over to Gantcher and first asked the girl at the front if a phone had been turned in. She said no, but I should check with the people at the fitness room desk. They also said they had nothing. I was pretty discouraged at this point. I went over to the cubby where I had stashed my things yesterday and it wasn’t there. Finally, on a lark, I walked over to the elliptical machine I had used and…ta da… there it was. I was pretty amazed that no one had taken it or turned it in since I had left it there some 14 or 15 hours earlier. Thank you human-kind.

Feeling optimistic, I headed back out to do my morning shakeout run. It was incredibly windy (~30mph) and I really felt it on the exposed turf field. I ran on the turf for about 25 minutes and then headed back inside to do the lift (below) before jogging back to Lewis.

The total run was 33:10 for 4M++.

AM2: After returning from the turf field, I did the Phase IV Lift in the gym. It’s nice doing the lifts in the morning because the gyms are not very crowded (surprise, surprise at 8:00am on Monday morning…) I started moving towards slightly lower weights on the upper body work and focused more on form, especially on the dynamic lunges. I can see my knee wanting to bend inwards every time and it takes a good amount of focus to make it not. Anyways, it all felt good. The lift was 3 sets of [12,10,8x seated row @40lb, 10x incline DB press @ 10lb freeweights, 10x lateral raise @ 5lb freeweights, 12,10,8x horizontal pull ups, 8,6,6x hamstring curls @ 80lb, 30x bicycle crunch, 12,10,8x dynamic lunge, 10x Shoulder press @10lb free weight, 30x crunches].

PM: After EMID, I jogged over to Gantcher to meet up with Jeff for a nice easy-day, easy run together. It’d been a while since I’d talked with him, so it was good to catch up. I started out doing a mile or so in the cage while waiting for him and then we headed out into the ridiculously blustery day. It had cooled off and was now probably only in the low 40s (it was 56F when I woke up this morning) and the wind made it feel a good bit colder.

We ran an aimless loop down towards long lakes and then back on the other side, then turned left where we usually come back straight on Boston Ave and headed through Medford. We then ended up way down by where we go to the Fells and came back that way towards campus. Afterwards, Jeff headed out and I headed back into Gantcher to do some strides and drills.

Since it was early and I had a lot of time, I decided to roll out one of the big, long, blue mats and do my foot drills on that. It was a nice change from doing them in spikes on the Gantcher floor. I did FULL-full foot drills (including the walking on inside/outside/heel/toe, etc. and high knees, butt kicks, etc) all on the blue mats. Afterwards, I spiked up and did 4x100m strides with 100m jog rest. These felt pretty good so I did 2x200m strides which I timed in 30.3, 29.8.

Finally, I cooled down with about a mile on the track (in my trainers again), before rolling out and having a nice chat with Dan about the upcoming weeks.

The total run was 1:15:54 for 10M+.

Tuesday, March 8, 2011 – AM: Core 100s, 50s, 20x side dip, 30x Kenyan, 20x superman, 30x leg lift.

PM: After class, I decided to get my workout done early, since I would be doing it alone anyways. It was pretty nice out, in the upper 30s, lower 40s and sunny. I jogged over to the outdoor track to stash my bottle of Gatorade and then jogged over to the turf field to warm up. I ran for about 2M on the turf field and then jogged back over to the track, stopping in Anderson to pick up my problem set.

After about 4M of easy jogging, I switched into my Peer flats and did half-rep foot drills on the grass. It felt nice to be back on the outdoor track, especially on such a clear, crisp day. I was feeling good as I did a few strides and then 200m at the pace I wanted to start at (~5:20). I then toed the line and got ready to go.

The workout was 3x4000m at tempo pace, with 400m jog rest in 2:00 or faster. Aiming for under 13:20 for the 4ks, this would bring the total workout to 8M in under 44min (5:30 pace). After that, it would be a bit of spiked-up, quicker stuff, totaling no more than 800m (something like 400, 200, 200 or 2x400m).

I started off feeling pretty decent and was very consistent running 79.x for 7 of the first 8 laps. Around 3000m, I started to feel a bit tired and I realized that this was going to be a tougher day than I had expected. I ended up coming through in 13:18, 5:21 pace. I had hoped to run about this pace for the first one, but honestly, I had hoped it would feel a lot easier and that I would have a lot more room to progress.

I took my first rest pretty aggressively and ran only took 1:52 for the 400m (7:30 pace). This may sound really slow, but given that most of my interval rest has been really more of a shuffle-jog, it felt pretty quick. As I took off on the second rep, I don’t think that I was quite fully recovered.

I went out pretty well, trying to run a bit more focused than the first rep. This worked for the first mile or so; I came through 1600m in 5:16. After that, though, I struggled to maintain the pace. It’s also worth noting here that the wind had picked up a good amount and there was a pretty serious head-wind on the back straight. I slowed down over the second half, but still managed to come in at 13:18 again.

I took the second rest bout much easier and felt a bit better going into the third and final rep. I again tried to stay focused and not let myself slip off the pace like I had in the middle rep. This worked out a lot better. I came through the mile slower (5:17) but managed to hold onto that pace, coming through 2M in 10:34. I felt a lot better on this last rep and was able to run the last lap just a bit more focused in 77.7. The final rep was in 13:12.

I took about 3 minutes of jogging, putting my windbreaker back on (I had been freezing on the last interval) and switching into my Tumbes spikes. Once spiked-up, I headed into a 400m. I was trying to run the first 400m quick, but not too hard. This worked out fine and I felt pretty decent running 68.9. I took 200m very slow jog and then ran one more quarter. This time, I wanted to go out at a similar pace and close hard the last 200m. I ended up going out at a dawdling pace (35.6) but was able to close pretty decently in 31.6.

After changing back into my trainers, I jogged back over to the turf field, ran about 1M on the turf, and then jogged over to Gantcher to grab some ice bags before jogging back to Dewick for some chow. The cool-down was 2M++ in about 20min (no watch), which brings it to about 15 for the workout with 8.5M of quality.

All in all, this was a tougher workout than I expected and a bit slower than I had hoped for. I think that there are a few factors (the wind, the fact that it was my first time on the outdoor track, that I was alone) that contributed, but mostly I think I was just a bit tired. I had a pretty tough workout on Saturday, 20M+ on Sunday, and then one easy day yesterday. I think I just wasn’t quite recovered, especially since I was taxing such a similar system to the workout on Saturday.

It kind of sucks that I can’t run 12km of work faster than my 12km PR from last year, even when split up with rest and on the track, but I’m getting there. Although, looking at my log from last year, I ran this same workout 7 days before my 10,000m PR and ran 13:20, 13:23, 13:29. Hopefully this means I’m already in PR 10k shape.

Anyways, I’ll probably take tomorrow easier than I had planned and then pretty easy Thursday as well so that I’ll hopefully be feeling fresh by the time I get to Friday. All in all, it was still a solid workout. I haven’t run sub-5:30 pace for 8M very many times (in fact, I’m not sure I ever have… my HMRRC split at 8M was 44:27. So, yeah. Can’t complain.

Splits:

30 minutes warm up

Wednesday, March 9, 2011 - AM: I had some pretty intense night-mares last night but managed to still sleep for a while. I woke up feeling pretty tired at 7:30am and got myself out of bed and headed out for my morning shakeout. It was a bit cooler than it’s been – only about 30F and windy. I wore medium tights, 2 tech shirts, neck warmer, light mittens, hat, and yellow windbreaker.

I jogged over to the turf field and did my usual shakeout on the soft ground. It felt pretty good. My right foot has still not gotten 100% which I’m a bit bugged by. It’s not that it’s ever really that bad or that it’s getting worse, it just seems to be consistently annoying. Some days, I won’t notice it at all, while others it bugs me a good bit, especially on sharp right turns and uneven ground. I’m pretty sure this started out before my indoor races, which would mean it’s been over a month. My general rule is that if it’s not getting worse, running on it is okay. I’ve never had something stay so consistently in the same state for a long time, though. I’m just hoping it’ll start to feel a lot better once I cut back mileage in the next few weeks.

Anyways, the foot actually felt fine once I was running on it. It was really just getting out of bed and having it really stiff that felt shitty. On the field (even turning right) it wasn’t too bad.

I jogged back to Lewis afterwards, rolled out, and headed for breakfast.

The total run was 33:12 for 4M++.

PM: After EMID, I walked over to Gantcher and sat around shooting the shit with some guys for a bit, before realizing that no one wanted to run to the Charles, so I left by myself. I was feeling pretty tired today and decided to actively take it a lot easier than the last few weeks. Instead of doing 15M, I was planning on 12-14M, but more importantly, I was definitely not going to be running 5:40 pace at the end of the run. I wanted to keep it a good easy to easy-moderate pace (somewhere in the 6:30-7:00 range).

I felt pretty stiff heading out and after a mile or so, I was debating just doing 6-8M and doing my longer single tomorrow. I came to the 3M mark and was quicker than I had expected (~20 minutes), so I decided to head out to the Charles and see how I felt.

Once I was on the nice dirt and grass of the Charles, I felt a lot better. I maintained a good rhythm and only had to stop once at a light. I crossed the river at the Mass Ave bridge which was really brutal. There was a VERY strong wind gusting from the sci-museum up river. It was freezing on the bridge and I thought I was going to get blown over. Once I got off, though, it provided a nice tail-wind for a couple of miles until I got back to Harvard. I passed through 9M in ~58 minutes and then relaxed a bit for the last few miles back to campus. I tacked on a bit inside before stopping to take my shoes off.

Once back, I did FULL-full foot drills on the blue mats again before rolling out, stretching, and doing core (below). Finally, I rounded it up to 13M with a nice cool down jog back over to Dewick for a nice dinner.

The total run was 1:26:48 for 13M (6:40 average).

PM2: In gantcher, I did core – 100s, 50s, 50x side crunch, 30x side dip, 30x bird-dog, 20x static lunge, 50x leg lift.

Thursday, March 10, 2011 – AM: I woke up around 8am and had a quick breakfast before jogging over to alumni fields to do an easy run. The whole fields were pretty much clear and, for the most part, pretty dry. So, I decided to do my run around the perimeter of the fields. It was still nice and soft like the turf, but the loop was closer to a mile than 400m and it felt a little less boring. I still listened to Spanish pod to keep myself from going too stir-crazy. It was really windy, but not too bad other than that.

After 8M or so, I headed up to the turf field and did about a mile barefoot on the turf. After that, I stopped and did FULL-full barefoot drills on the turf. These felt solid and I felt pretty good going into a few barefoot strides. I was able to get in 6 good ones and then I got kicked off the field but some maintenance guy in a (very loud) tractor who was blowing all of the little black specks back onto the turf.

Anyways, it worked out fine and I put my shoes back on and jogged back to Lewis before breakfast. The total run was 10M+ in

PM: After my first ME-1 lab of the semester (halfway through the semester…), I headed over to Gantcher to do my afternoon workout. I ended up using the stationary bike by the track because I wanted to multi-task and get some work done and this was the only one that seemed to have a reasonable place to put a laptop. I actually got a good amount done on my EMID take-home mid term and got a pretty good workout too. The effort was never too serious, but it was a good shake out. The total was 46 min.

PM2: After getting off the bike, I rolled out and stretched a bit before doing Core – 100s, 50s, 20x side dip, 20x superman, 30x leg lift.

Friday, March 11, 2011 – AM: There’s no way to beat around the bush. This was just a terrible work out. I woke up naturally before my alarm and was actually feeling okay this morning. I had normal pre-run breakfast (pear, orange, chewy bar, some pretzels) and jogged over to the track at around 8:20 to get in a mile or so before Nick showed up.

The forecast had said cold rain (upper 40s), but I was pleased to find that it was just foggy out as I left Lewis; there didn’t seem to be any precipitation coming down at all. I ran over to Baronian and stashed my shoes over by the locker rooms and proceeded to run around the infield grass for a while. I felt pretty good. The right foot was bugging me a little on the uneven terrain, but nothing too bad. Nick showed up a bit late after about 17 minutes or so of jogging and then we headed out together on C Loop. I cut back on North st, which still ended up being a bit longer than I had planned. I got back to the track and the total was 36:14 for the warm-up.

At that point, I headed into the locker room and changed into my Peer flats. I came back out and did foot drills on the track. My foot was definitely a bit more sore in the thin flats, but still not too bad. As I headed into my first strides, it had started to drizzle. By the time I was finished with strides, it had picked up into a pretty heavy rain.

I jogged back into the locker room and took my shoe off and did an impromptu tape job on the right pinky toe, pulling it in so that the pad didn’t have as much freedom to move horizontally. This felt infinitely better and I was actually feeling really pleased about everything. As I stepped out of the locker room, it was pretty much pouring and Nick and I got ready to go.

Cold rain is hard to dress for. I started out wearing half tights, 2 tech shirts, my palio cap, light mittens, and no socks in my flats. This felt okay at first as we started out running, but after a few laps, my two shirts were totally soaked and it felt like I was trying to run with chain mail armor on.

Anyways, the workout was 2 sets of [2400m, 90 sec jog, 1000m, 90 sec jog, 600m, 3:00 jog] +1M at 10k pace at the end. I started off leading the first few laps, running 77s for the first two and then slowing to a 79.8. At this point, Nick took over and led for the rest of the first set. I felt like shit and by now almost the entire track was covered in about an inch of standing water. This meant that we were essentially running through on big continuous puddle.

This workout was really hard for me both physically and mentally. Physically, I was just miserable out there. I was freezing cold the entire time and my legs never felt smooth or warmed up. It was also really hard to pace off of Nick in this weather because if I tried to stay right on his back, I water and mud and goose shit kicked up into my face. So, I would try to hang back a couple meters but then end up getting gapped and losing contact.

The times on everything were depressingly slow and I think that contributed to the overall failure of the workout. Once I saw how slow I was running, it was hard to maintain the pace, especially once I lost Nick. I was probably 4-8 seconds behind Nick on almost every interval. What bugs me is that I never really felt that tired after each rep, so I feel like I just wasn’t pushing myself hard enough. Obviously the times were slow because of all the water, but I think my biggest disappointment is that I let myself throw in the towel way too early. I’m disappointed in my effort more than my performance.

The second set, I didn’t even bother looking at splits or my watch during the rep, I just tried to run by effort. Still, I found myself losing contact with Nick and finishing a good 4-8 seconds behind him. I timed the first rep (2400m) in 8:01. This is slower than my tempo pace and I was well behind Nick. The last two intervals I didn’t even bother timing. I just tried to focus on staying with Nick and running a good effort. I still finished well behind him and didn’t feel satisfied at all with the effort.

I jogged right into the locker room, grabbed my shoes and shirts, and jogged over to Gantcher. I decided I’d run the last 1M inside and try to at least get some quality effort out of the day. I jogged over to Gantcher and switched into my tumbes spikes since my flats were soaked and headed right into the mile. The pace felt harder than I expected. I came through 1200m in 3:50 and closed the last quarter ~5k pace in 72.6 for a 5:02.9.

I was glad to feel a bit smoother inside, but honestly I still didn’t feel great running that. It definitely didn’t feel as easy and smooth as the 10k/5k paced workouts I’ve been doing with Murner the last couple weeks. I’m not sure if I’m just a bit over-tired and beat up from doing more mileage lately or if there’s an iron/weight component or if I just had a bad day. This is the third workout in a row now where I haven’t felt 100%, though, which doesn’t make me feel great. I haven’t had a really solid workout since last Wednesday’s hard session where I ran 4:50/4:47. I’m hoping that these workouts are just making me a bit more tired than I expected and I need to take a bit more recovery between sessions. I don’t want to get in a hole of not being recovered.

So, I was planning on doing a good quality long run on Sunday. I guess I’ll play it more by ear and see how I feel. We are doing the 6xMile workout on Tuesday or Wednesday and I’d really like that to go well.

Anyways, after the run, I did 2M+ cool-down inside and then jogging back to Lewis for a total of 13M+ for the day.

2M cool-down inside and back to Lewis

PM: I headed over to Gantcher around 3:00pm to get in my afternoon workout. I started out with 35min on the elliptical machine at an easy to moderate intensity. I watched an episode of the office in Spanish and then continued reading Henrietta Lacks.

PM2: After the XT, I did the Phase III lift, in both sides of the gym. The lift felt good. Focused mostly on balance and stability, especially with the RDL and lunge walk. 3 sets of [tricep dips (to failure, 30-36), row machine (10x, 40lb), pushups (10x), chin up (5,6,7x), single leg RDL (8x each foot), side crunch (12-30x), shooters (15-20x), lunge (20 each side, 20 fwd, 20 back), quad extension (8,6,6x @80lb), suitcases (15-20x)].

Saturday, March 12, 2011 – AM: I came home last night after watching Connor and Marvel run the 800m prelims at Nationals (sadly, neither made the final, but both ran pretty well) and the women’s DMR (which I’m pretty sure finished in the top 10 – yep, 9th). We also watched the men’s DI 5000m which was pretty awesome. Chelanga was held off on the last lap by Iona’s Korir. Diego Estrada had a sick race for 4th, I think.

Anyways, I had a really good night’s sleep in my own bed at home. I woke up early at like 6:30am because my room was filled with sunlight, but I just got up and peed and then came back in and shut the blinds and went back to bed. I figured I’d sleep for another hour or so because that’s when my body has been waking me up. I was pleased, then, to find myself sleeping pretty soundly until almost 9:00am. This is the latest I’ve slept in a while and it felt great.

I got up, had breakfast (a pear, some toast with PB and jam and dried berries) and then drove into town to run. I wanted to see if the Emerson track was clear – it was – and then I figured I’d check out how the trails were since it’s been so warm here. I parked at the track and then ran out to minute man. I ran about 400m up the trail and it was a muddy mess. As soon as it entered the woods, though, it was just a sheet of ice. There’s still a good amount of snow out here in the shadier areas (still huge snow banks around our neighborhood), so I wasn’t too surprised to find all the snow still there.

I decided to check out the trail over towards great meadows while I was there. This was also a big pile of mud and snow, so I called it quits and jogged back towards the track. I was feeling pretty sluggish and tired for the first 30-40 minutes of this run, but as I ran up towards CCHS, I started to feel a bit better. The last place I wanted to try was the turf field at CC which was about ¾ clear. This was great news and I skirted around a kids LAX practice on the first field and had most of the other field to myself. I then spent 20 minutes running around the field and speaking to myself, out loud, in Spanish. To an onlooker, this may have been a strange site.

At 60 minutes, I stopped, took off my shoes and did full foot drills on the grass. I was feeling a lot better at this point and felt good and frisky on the drills. I opted not to do strides and let today be a true recovery day – stopping when I could do more. Instead, I just did about 5 minutes of jogging on the turf in my bare feet. The good news about today’s run is that my tape-job from yesterday seems to have really helped my right foot. This was the first run in a few days that I really didn’t feel anything at all, even on sharp right turns and slanted ground, where I’ve noticed it the most

I then jogged back to the track and ran a library book down to the library for my mom. It was really nice by the time I finished – around 50F and sunny. Between the bright sunshine and feeling a bit more recovered, I was feeling pretty good.

The total run was 10M+ in 76:37, with the majority on grass/dirt/turf.

PM: Once they got back from NH, I had a nice (very) easy shakeout with Mr. C (on foot) around the hood. It was pretty sweet that we could leave at like 5:30pm and have it be light out. Anyways, I ran about 10 minutes before heading out with Mr. C, since he needed to get changed. After that, we headed out together and jogged around the hood very slowly.

It was nice to run together and it was a good, very easy, shakeout. A nice run and chat with Mr. C. I was running somewhere in the 7-8min range at first and then we were probably running 9:00+.

The total run was 36:29 for ~4M.

Sunday, March 13, 2011 – AM: We lost an hour of sleep last night, since we turned back the clocks. With days having barely enough hours under normal circumstances, losing an hour, especially an hour of sleep, was pretty rough. I had my alarm set for 7:00am, which felt like 6:00am, but didn’t manage to drag myself out of bed until 7:50 or so. I had tried to force myself to go to bed at 9:00pm (the new 10:00pm), but it was tough to get to sleep that early.

Once I got up and started moving, I actually felt fine. I had a normal pre-long run breakfast (a pear, super toast, and an orange) and then got dressed and ready to go. Mr. C and I wanted to get out early to beat the traffic, since a bit of our route was on route 62. It must have been about 8:30-9:00am when we left and the temperature was in the upper 30s already. I wore shorts, 1 tech shirt, yellow wind breaker, light mittens, neck warmer, and a wool hat. I also decided to try wearing the compression sleeves that Mr. C got for his ever-sore calves. Not sure if they did anything, but at the very least, they kept my lower legs a bit warmer.

This was the first day in a while that I started out feeling pretty good. The first mile, usually around 6:25, was just about 6:00. I forced myself to relax and calm down a bit, but I was really glad to be running faster than I expected. It felt good to feel good. The next few miles were pretty easy and consistent. It was nice to have Mr. C’s company again (and I don’t feel as bad dragging him out here since it’s not like 10 degrees anymore). I felt pretty decent going up the first big hill by Emerson and we came through 5M in 31:39.

From there, I kept the pace controlled as we ran past nine acre corner and through the sanctuary. We saw a ton of strange road kill – not just squirrels, but woodchucks, a bunny, even a very large, very dead, beaver. Weird. Anyways, we came to the end of the sanctuary in 51:28 (19:48 for that 5k). From there, we turned right where we would usually head out left towards LS and proceeded up the last of the back hills. They felt a lot easier at 8-9M then the usual 15M. After that, we passed through 10M in 63:45 and then continued on old Marlboro all the way back to Emerson where we crossed route 2. The light happened to be in our favor, so we barely had to stop at all.

Once across route 2, there was about a mile or so on 62 before we got to Emerson field right at 14M (1:28:48, 6:20 pace). I quickly switched into my Peer flats and then we got on the track for 2M at HM pace. I was out a bit fast the first lap (78.x), but settled in and was super consistent for the rest of the run. It felt awesome and really relaxed. I came through the first mile in 5:18.4 and the second in 5:20.4 for a total of 10:38.8. I was really pleased with this because it just felt super relaxed. I was not trying to run that much faster than this in my tempo workout earlier this week, but I felt like I had to work a lot harder. I even had Mr. C bike along with me in lane 2 so that I could practice taking fluids at race pace.

After the work, it was a quick change of the shoes back into the trainers and then an easy 4M jog back home. We were running just over 7:00 pace and it felt really easy and comfy. I think this may have actually been less ware and tear on the body than just doing a 20M steady run at 6:10-20 pace. The pace work wasn’t easy, especially after 14M of moderate running, but I’m hoping it won’t leave me quite as beat as the last few long runs have had me feeling come workout day.

It still ended up being 20M, though, and even with the last 4M at 7:10 pace, I still managed to average 6:25 pace. I ended up stopping at the neighborhood and Mrs. V picked me up, since that would have been 21M and I didn’t want to go overboard. I felt good though – definitely not quite as wiped as I usually feel after hammering the last few miles of long run.

The total run was 2:08:10 for 20M (6:25 average).

PM: Duncan came over in the late afternoon and we cooked up a nice big dinner. We fired up the grill for the first time this year and made some big tasty steaks and then had a big buffet of leftovers to go with it. Yum! It was great to see Duncan, too. He’s home this week for Spring break – in fact, it seems like everyone has this week off except for us…

Anyways, after dinner, I let myself digest a bit and then did a quick 30 minute shakeout on the elliptical machine. It felt pretty good and it was nice to get moving after a big meal. The effort was pretty easy. I watched another episode of The Office in Spanish; my comprehension is pretty good at this point; I just need to work on my hablando.

PM2: Despues de usar el macina de elliptical, yo hice Core 100s, 50s, 30x side dip, 15x static lunge, 30x bird dog, 50x leg lift. Me sentía bien con todo.

Total for the week: 103 Miles in 10 runs
