Week of April 18, 2011

Monday, April 18, 2011 – AM: I slept pretty well last night and woke up naturally before 8am. I was pretty excited for the day – Marathon Monday! I had planned to run over to Jerzy’s house with Jerz and Luke around 9am, so I woke up, had some breakfast and then jogged over to meet them at Ossippee. Rags ended up coming with us too, and the 4 of us headed off a bit after 9am.

We had a nice easy run through Harvard and then along the river. We crossed at BU and then ran down Comm av a bit until we got to Jerzy’s house which was just off of Beacon Street. It was a pretty fun run. The wind was blustery, which would prove to be important in the races later. I was also running with a small backpack with an extra shirt and my camera, phone, and wallet, which was kind of annoying, but it’s all good.

We got there around 9:40am – the women were about 10 minutes into the race, with Kim Smith already significantly in front. Everyone else got there a bit after 10am.

The total run was 5M++ EZ in 40 minutes.

PM: What a race! What races! What a day! Wow! A great morning of watching the marathon. We all gathered around Jerzy’s television to watch the races play out and then headed out to watch the leaders go by his house around mile 25 of the course. As the women went by, Desi was in the lead with the two Kenyans a step or two behind. From there, we sprinted back inside to watch the race conclude. An unbelievable performance for Desi. I really thought she had it. And then the men’s race! Hall kept coming back into the picture after I thought for sure he’d been dropped. Great race for him and unbelievably fast times all around – 2:04:5x for hall, 2:03:02 for Mutai ftmfw!!! Moses Mosop 2:03:06 for his debut race! Unreal!

After we had all calmed down a bit from the excitement of the races, we had a nice big lunch provided by Jerzy’s incredibly nice family – burgers, bean salad, great cookies! We sat around for a while and watched the procession of humanity go by that is the 25th mile of the Boston Marathon. Some people looked pretty pumped; some people looked fucking brutal. I’m not sure whether I was more terrified or inspired. Probably the latter.

Anyways, around 1pm, I left Jerzy’s to run back to campus with him, Scott, Erik, Sam, and a couple others. We ran along the river on the Boston side and then back the normal way from Harvard. It was a nice run, and I actually felt quite good. Sam, Erik, and I picked it up a bit the last few miles and that felt good.

After a failed attempt to get into Chetwynd to look around and see the furniture, I tacked on a bit of extra distance around campus before heading to Gantcher to lift.

The total run was 9M EZ-Mod in 62:40.

PM2: In Gantcher, I did the phase IV lift. The lift was 3 sets of [Seated row@40lb x12,10,8; Incline DB press @10lb free weights, 10 reps; Horizontal Pushups x12,10,8; Lateral Raises @5lb, 10 reps; Hamstring curls @ 90lb, 8, 6, 6; Bicycle Crunch x30, Dynamic lunges 12,10,8; Overhead DB Press @10lb, 12, 10, 8; Crunches x25]. Everything felt good.

Tuesday, April 19, 2011 - AM: Core (light) – 100s 50s, 20x side dip, 20x super man, 50x cherry pickers, 30x leg lift.

PM: I jogged down to practice and did about a mile easy to shake out before warming up with the team. It was pretty chilly and drizzling on and off, but not too windy, which was a welcome change. I warmed up for about 30 minutes back to the track and then changed into my Tumbes spikes. I did full foot drills on the track (grass was wet and muddy) and then did a few faster strides and a fast 200m.

The workout was 2 sets of 800m, 800m, 400m at 5k, 3k, and mile pace, respectively, followed by 4x200m fast. I was thinking ~ 2:24-26 for the first 800m, 2:20-22 for the second and 66-67 for the 400s.

It was a bit of a frustrating workout. I was in a nice big pack with Nick, Matt, Liam, Kyle, and Scott, but these guys were really hammering, especially on the middle 800s (running close to 2:10-12). I was often getting roped into going out way too fast (33.x) and then tying up way too early. I’m kind of frustrated because I really like to finish workouts feeling good and negative splitting intervals, and the last few weeks have been the opposite. I’ve consistently been pulled out way too fast and not been able to maintain. Not only do I feel like this is not giving me as good a training benefit as even paced work, but it makes running fast SEEM harder than it is. A big part of running intervals is to learn to run quick and relaxed. Running 2:24s shouldn’t be that hard, but they feel hard when I run the first 200m in 33 and I’m struggling to hang out after that.

Anyways, it was another “okay” workout. I didn’t feel 100%, but between the pacing and being a bit tired, I guess that’s to be expected.

I cooled down with the group through Porter and then tacked on some extra to get a bit more mileage for the day (the workout was only 4800m). I stretched and rolled a bit and then grabbed a quick dinner before heading to Alpinismo.

PM: 7M EZ in 53:59, Drills

PM2: Core – 100s, 50s, 30x flutter kick, 6:30 plank, 30x back bridge, 30x toes to sky, 30x superman, 50x leg lift

Thursday, April 21, 2011 – AM: I slept pretty well last night and woke up this morning naturally a bit before 8am. I rolled out my foot a bit with the fall and then jogged over to Gantcher to lift. I did the Lift Phase III, cutting out the heavy leg weights and cut the lunges in half (10x each). Everything felt okay.

AM2: After this, I did a quick cool-down on the stat bike. I did 30 minutes at a moderate-easy effort and felt good. Afterwards, I jogged back to Dewick for breakfast.

PM: I had a nice nap this afternoon and headed down to practice a bit before 3pm. It was crazy windy, 25-35mph with even stronger gusts. We stood around for a bit and then headed out. I started with a group heading towards Davis, but realized that they were only running 3 or 4 miles, so I turned away and headed up the bike path towards Alewife.

As I crossed the street and cut through the park before getting to Alewife, I was nearly blown over by the winds. It was ridiculous how strong it was. I felt like I was barely moving, despite feeling pretty good, legs-wise. When I rounded the corner around alewife, it was like walking into a wind-tunnel. The wind must have been at least 40-50mph. Insane.

I headed up the bike path and ran all the way up to Arlington center before turning around. I felt much better once I had turned back and the wind was behind me. My legs felt a lot better than yesterday, but there was still a tiny hitch in my stride. It’s pretty frustrating that it’s now been 3+ weeks and I’ve seen only some improvement. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that it won’t bug me on Saturday.

I got back to the track after about 64 minutes of running. Once back, I switched into my tumbes spikes and did full foot drills on the grass. I then did a bit of quicker pace-work on the track. I did 2x100m pretty easy and then 200m and 400m at 5k effort (I say effort because the wind was really fucking with things). The 200m felt fine and I ran 36.3, but the 400m was pretty brutal as I was forced to run into the wind. I think I ran like 35-36 and then a 38.x. Yikes! I then did one faster 200m in 30.0 and then finally 2x strides with some others. The rest was about 2:00 between everything.

Everything felt pretty good. The stride was still not quite perfect. I’m coming down a bit lower on my right leg when I land on it than on my left. My left leg doesn’t have quite as much “spring,” which probably accounts for why I’ve been running slowly. I’ve been stretching and massaging a lot which seems to be helping. I haven’t taken any advil since Monday, which is probably the longest stretch so far. Hopefully it’ll feel good for Saturday!

Friday, April 22, 2011 – AM: I slept pretty well last night and woke up around 8am naturally. I got up and did a bit of rolling and stretching before heading out for my morning shakeout run. The power was out, so I was a bit worried about getting locked out – for some reason, the lights are powered by a back-up generator, but the door locks aren’t.

I ran the long way down to Alumni fields and then ran 2 big laps around the fields. I was a bit stiff at first but felt better by the end. By the time I got back to Lewis, the power was back and I was able to get in. I did a good bit of static stretching and then headed down to Dewick for breakfast.

The total was 4M s/o in 30:53.

PM: I spent a few hours working in the tech booth today, running the recording for some really weird concert. I took two advil around 1pm and headed out to run at about 3pm. I jogged down to Baronian and met up with a bunch of guys who were all looking to go pretty short and easy.

We left in a big group and ran on Yerxa – a run I don’t think I’d ever done before. We went out towards the bike path and then were winding through a bunch of little residential areas. At some point, we ended up running along the train tracks for a few hundred meters and coming out at Porter Square station. This was a bit hair-raising.

Anyways, it was a nice conversational run. More importantly, my leg and my stride both felt super solid. This was the first run that I’ve felt 100% in a while, so hopefully it’s just in time to race well tomorrow!

Once we got back to the track, Jerzy and I tacked on another mile or so on the grass. After this, I did full barefoot drills on the grass and some stretching before heading out.

The total was 6M EZ in 42:00 with Drills.

Saturday, April 23, 2011 – AM: I slept pretty poorly last night. My nose was running like a faucet and I continuously had to blow it so that I didn’t gag on phlegm. Pretty nasty. It was also just Friday night in a college dorm, so getting to bed at a reasonable hour is never that practical. Finally, I was a bit pumped up because I saw the results of the guys from Princeton – Murner 14:34, Matty 14:45, Nick 14:55, Kyle 15:08. I was totally psyched for them and it made me even more excited to race the next day and hopefully make them proud as well.

I finally fell asleep and woke up around 8:30am. I had a nice big breakfast and then came back to Lewis to relax and get some work done. The weather was terrible outside – 40-50F and rainy/windy – so I took a little rest in my room before heading over to the meet. I wanted to watch Luke run the steeple, so I walked over around noon. Already, the meet was running ahead of schedule, so I got there just in time. It looked pretty brutal – not a nice day to be running through the steeple pit (though the whole track was so puddly, it probably didn’t make that much of a difference). Still it was a fun race to watch.

I then went and sat in the locker room for a while. The meet was moving fast enough that I didn’t want to go back to Lewis because I was afraid I’d miss my cue to warm-up, but I didn’t really want to stay on my feet, especially outside. So, I just hung out in the locker room and read and tried to zone out for a while. I got up at some point to go watch the 1500m, since we had a bunch of guys in that, but otherwise, I just chilled out.

Eventually, Rags and Brunk, who were going to help out with pacing, showed up and we all decided to go warm up. The rain was pretty steady, so we jogged over to Gantcher and ran around inside. It felt good to get out of the rain. I was a bit stiff, but not too bad. We ran for about 25 minutes and then headed back to Baronian. By the time we got back, the women’s 5k was already started, which meant we only had about 15 minutes until our race. I ran back to the locker-room and got my Tumbes spikes, singlet, arm-warmers, hat and gloves and then headed back out. I did something like half-rep drills and then a few strides and then it was time to get ready.

The race started out as I expected. One kid who was seeded at 15’00 went out ahead of us and then it was just me, with Rags and Brunk in front of me, and then some others behind. We came through the first 200m a bit fast (~35) and then settled. The track was quite flooded in some spots, particularly on the home straight-away where we were forced to run into lane 2-3 or run through a pretty deep puddle.

The first few laps went by quickly and didn’t feel too bad. In retrospect, we were running pretty slowly (74high), but I just head “74” from Murner, so given the weather, I figured that was all right. After about a mile, though, shit started to get real. I started really having to work to keep Rags and Brunk in front of me. I kept falling back a few steps and then having to surge a little bit to catch back up. We came through 2000m in what I saw as 6:10 (6:11.6), which was pretty even, I thought, but then at 3000m we were at 9:25, so had run a 3:15 last km. Yikes!

All of a sudden, it was like the nightmare of the indoor 5ks was coming back and I couldn’t escape it. I panicked a bit at 3k when I realized how much we had slowed down, and then I realized that I was about to have to run by myself for the last mile. In my head, I begged Brunk and Rags to stay in and keep helping me, keep being a target for me to shoot for, but as we came to 3200m in 10:04, they stepped off the track.

At that point, I was really just struggling to stay vertical. I felt terrible and totally spent. All I wanted was to stop running and for it to be over. I ran the third mile in 5:18.1, which is essentially tempo pace or even HMP. I tried to shift gears the last lap or two and I felt like I was running all out. Still I was only running tempo pace, and even my last 200m was only 38.8. As I came down the homestretch, I saw the clock in the 15:50s and thought “wow, I’m going to run almost as slow as I did indoors…” I crossed the line and it said 16 minutes. Wow…

Needless to say, this was not the race I was hoping to run. I think I can confidently say that this was my poorest showing of my collegiate career. I’m in better shape than I was indoors and ran slower… Hmm. I was pretty bummed after the race. This may have been my only chance at a 5k this season and I’m pretty tired of having such a shitty PR. I was also just frustrated because I feel like I’ve been really working my ass off and this is not the kind of performance that reflects that. To put this in perspective, today I ran 4:56, 5:08, 5:18 for a 16:01. Last Saturday, in my workout, after having run a split mile and 2M of tempo, I ran the last 3M of my tempo in 5:13, 5:10, 5:00 for 15:55.

I headed back to Lewis and changed into some dry clothes before heading out for my cool-down. I ran by myself out and back on Lakes/C-Loop for a total of 5M+ in 38:08. I felt okay, not surprisingly, I was not that tired.

Sunday, April 24, 2011 – AM: I took Nyquil last night to see if it would help with my runny nose. I ended up sleeping for like 11 hours, waking up around 8:30am. I had a bit of breakfast – half a piece of matza with jam and an orange, and then got some work done before heading down to long run.

I jogged down to Baronian and it was already quite warm. It was probably about 65F already. I wore just a long sleeve tech shirt and shorts and I was a bit warm by the end.

We headed out a bit after 10am. I started off with Nick, Matt, Bellet, and Kyle as we headed towards the Charles. I felt pretty lousy at first. We were only running 6:50-7:00 pace, but it felt quite fast. I think if I had just started out easier, I would have felt fine, but I wanted to try to run with Nick and Kyle and so I was struggling a bit early on. Nick and Kyle ended up running away from me and Bellet and Matt turned off early, so I ended up running the majority of the run by myself.

This ended up being fine, probably a good thing actually. I slowed down and ran by effort along the river and was actually feeling quite good by the time I got back to Harvard. The last 5km back to Tufts felt really good and it was the first time in literally weeks that I have felt smooth running at a decent pace. It was just like something clicked and all of a sudden I didn’t feel awkward and like I was working so hard. It felt good to feel good. No I’m just hoping it won’t be a one day thing.

It’s worth noting, as well, that this was the first morning I’ve been able to run on my left calf without it giving me any trouble at all. This is a pretty big deal and could very well be a big part of why I finally started to feel good after 80 minutes of running.

Anyways, so the first 11.5M were in 80 minutes, just under 7:00 pace, and then the 5k back from the river was about 19:30. I tacked on a bit to round it up to 15M and then did FULL-full foot drills on the grass barefoot. I did some static stretching and then headed to Dewick for brunch.

The total run was 15.1M in 1:41:19, 6:42 average.

PM: After dinner, I did Core – 100s, 50s, 50x cherry pickers, 30x side dip, 7:00 plank, 30x bird dog, 50x leg lift.

Total for the week: 84 Miles in 9 Runs

Week of April 11, 2011

Monday, April 11, 2011 – AM: I took some Benadryl last night and slept like a rock from 9:30pm-8:30am. I woke up feeling a bit groggy, but glad to have gotten a good night’s rest. Right before heading into school, I realized that I had my course registration for the fall at 10:30am and I wasn’t at all prepared. So, I ended up scrambling my shit together and not having time to do my morning run before class.

Instead, I ended up doing my first run right after my morning class – around 11:45am. I felt pretty good and had a nice easy run on Lakes. I ran all the way to Boston ave basically and then turned around, so that I maximized my time on the nice dirt trail along the river. Essentially, 2x lakes. I was feeling pretty good by the end, especially since it was beautiful out – sunny and in the 60s.

The total run was 6M+ in 46:03.

PM: I grabbed a quick lunch and then headed to EMID where we had our presentations. One of our group members – who was supposed to do the demo - didn’t show up, so it was a bit of a cluster fuck, but it ended up okay.

After this, I headed down to Baronian for a nice run with the guys. It was really warm – in the low 70s and sunny. We headed out in a big group towards the Fells. I was glad to find that everyone seemed to be pretty tired and so the pace was very easy. We ran on Short Res and it was really beautiful in the woods. A really great day to be in there. I felt pretty good too – no limping again. I was a bit tired since I had run my first run only a few hours before, but it wasn’t too bad.

Once we got back, I tacked on a bit and then did FULL-full foot drills in my socks on the grass. These felt solid. I laid around for a while and then did some circuit work before heading out.

The total run was 7M+ in 53:59.

PM2: The circuit was 4 sets of [25-30 crunches, 10 pushups, 30x bicycles, 20x static lunge, 10x deep squat].

Tuesday, April 12, 2011 – AM: I slept pretty well last night and woke up naturally around 7:45am. The calve was a bit stiff, as it seems to be in the mornings, so I just did some core – 100s, 50s, 30x side dip, 30x toes to sky, 30x cherry pickers, 30x leg lift.

PM: I had a productive afternoon after a long morning of classes. I headed over to practice a bit before 3:00pm for a workout at Baronian. I jogged 1M easy on the infield to warm up and then headed out with a big pack to continue warming up through Porter. The total warm up was about 4M in 30 minutes back to Baronian. After this, I took a quick pee and then changed into my new flats (thus far un-named) and did full foot drills on the grass.

I was feeling pretty lousy as I was doing these final warm-ups and drills. I just felt a bit tired. I had felt decent on my warm-up, but I noticed that my heart-rate was quite elevated even a few minutes after I finished jogging (over 120bpm). I was trying hard not to go into the workout with a negative attitude, but there was definitely a lurking fear in the back of my mind that I was not ready to work out today.

After the drills, I did a few quicker strides and then a 200m with the first 100 @10k pace and the second at 5k pace, ~36.5. Finally, I got together with Nick and Matt and we headed off together.

The workout was 2 sets of [1600m, 3x800m] with 90 seconds rest between each rep and 4:00 between the two sets. The goal paces were ~75 for the 1600m and ~72 for the 800m. At the end, we would do 4x200m with 60 seconds rest.

The weather was decent: cloudy and around 60F with winds ~10mph into the back straight. The wind was noticeable, but not terrible.

I led us through the first mile rep and it was quite even. Matt was a second or so ahead of us by 400m, so it was really just Nick and I. The pace actually felt pretty reasonable and we ran 4:59.8, which I was pretty pleased with, especially given how lousy I’d been feeling a few minutes earlier.

The short rest before the 800s was pretty tough. The first rep felt fast – and it was for the first 200m. I followed Nick as he lead us through right behind Matt in 34-35 for the first 200m. From this point, I was feeling pretty cooked and struggled to maintain contact. I slowed down a lot on the second lap and was not feeling great. The pace still just felt fast. The next rep was similar; we were out a bit fast in 34.h and then I really struggled again, running the second lap in 75. The last rep was really disheartening, as I could only manage a 2:32 – slower than my 10k pace.

The 4:00 rest was long and very welcome. During this time, I changed from the flats into my Tumbes spikes. I felt much better going into the second 1600m and it showed as we ran the first lap in 73 and it felt more like a 75-76. From there, we settled down and I still managed to come through in 4:56. The 90 sec rest was short again and Nick led us through the first 800m, this time taking us out very slow in 37.x. Feeling good, I passed him on the home straight and led the next lap with Brunk – who had joined us – in 72. The next rep was similar, but a more controlled start, running 2:25. I really felt the short rest by the last rep and positive split 73/74 to run a 2:27. Much better than the first set, but still not great overall. Also, I really felt the difference between the spikes and flats – especially on the faster work. I found myself running much more up on my toes when running in the spikes, which could explain why the pace felt a bit easier.

After this, we took another 4:00 jog before starting the 200s. We would only be taking 60 sec rest between each, so we would alternate where we started each one. The first and third would be into the wind with the 2nd and 4th with the wind. We were supposed to run these controlled at “mile pace,” which Murner had said was about 33.

Nick and I ran these together, running 33.0, 30.6, 31.0, 30.2. It felt fast but definitely not all out sprinting. I tried to focus on keeping relaxed and keeping my form together.

I cooled down through Porter again with Matty and Nick and then tacked on a bit on the field to round it up to 3M.

Overall, this was an okay workout. I think it showed that I really need to let myself recover over the next couple of days. I think I’ve underestimated how much time my body would need to recover after Sam Howell and now I’m still feeling the lingering effects of that race and the following week.

I’m kind of frustrated that I can’t seem to run well at 5k pace right now, especially given that I’m supposed to race a 5k in 4 days. I’m hoping that I’m still just on the up-swing in terms of recovery and this workout didn’t catch me at my 100%. It’s frustrating to not be able to keep up with guys who I know I can run with. On a positive note, it’s pretty inspiring to watch Matt crush these workouts. He killed it today and ran like 4:50s and 2:20s looking smooth. The kid should run 14:3x and 30:2x-3x this year. Can’t wait to see it.

Wednesday, April 13, 2011 – AM: I had some trouble falling asleep and woke up frustrated to find my calf still pretty sore. I tried to stretch it a bunch and loosen it up before heading out. This seemed to help some, but there was definitely still a kink in my stride as I headed out. I told myself I’d give myself the jog over to Gantcher/alumni fields and if it didn’t feel significantly better by the time I got there, I’d just bike or elliptical instead.

It ended up feeling better – still not perfect, but significantly better – so I ran two big laps of the fields. I then headed back towards campus since I started hearing thunder and I didn’t feel like being out in a huge open field in the middle of a lightning storm. I ran back around the horn to Lewis which ended up being just right. After I got back, I did a good amount of stretching and rolling before heading to breakfast.

Total run was 4M+ s/o in 32:55

PM: After class, I headed over to Gantcher for practice. I tried not taking any advil today to see how I would feel. I’m not sure if it was that or the fact that I ran pretty hard yesterday, but my stride definitely didn’t feel quite right again today. It was a pretty miserable day in general. The temperature was in the mid 40s and it was pouring for most of the day.

I headed out with a big group towards the fells. The rain wasn’t too bad and I was dressed pretty warmly. We all stayed together until we got to the woods and then everyone split up. I ended up running off the back by myself after a few miles. I just felt pretty beat. It wasn’t a terribly enjoyable run, but I did feel better by the end, a continuing characteristic of runs recently, so that’s keeping me somewhat optimistic.

I came back to Gantcher and tacked on a bit to round up to 9M. After that, I rolled, stretched, and then talked to Ethan about racing. It looks like now I will be racing next weekend, which I’m much more pleased with. I’ve talked to Jon and he also thinks this is a good move. I’m hoping that if I take the next 10 days a lot easier than the last I’ll be feeling a lot more ready to race come next weekend. I’m feeling optimistic.

The total run was 9M EZ in 63 minutes.

PM2: After stretching and rolling, I did core with Murner and Nick. I don’t remember exactly how it went, but it was something like this: 2x30 sit ups, 60 sec x [legs up low, high, low, high], 50x crunch, side crunch, 100x bicycle, 60 sec x [front plank, side plank, one arm plank], 90 sec front plank. It felt nice to have a change of pace with the core. It wasn’t too hard.

Thursday, April 14, 2011 – AM: I slept okay and the calf felt a bit better this morning than it has. This was the first morning that I’ve been able to jog on it in the morning without a significant limp right after waking up. I wanted to play it safe, though, so I just jogged over to Gantcher and did 30 minutes on the elliptical before lifting. The elliptical felt alright, moderate effort, as did the jogging.

The total was 30min on Elliptical

AM2: In Gantcher, I did the phase III lift – 3 sets of [tricep dips (to failure, 30-36), row machine (10x, 40lb), pushups (10x), chin up (7x), single leg RDL (8x each foot), side crunch (15x), shooters (15x), lunge (20 each side, 20 fwd, 20 back), quad extension (8x @80lb), suitcases (15-20x), Leg Press (8x @ 150lb)].

Felt good, a bit pooped by the end because I was running on empty. Afterwards, I jogged back to Lewis before breakfast.

PM: I was lucky to get out of lab really early and made it down to practice before people left. I felt pretty tired and was not looking forward to another slog fest. It was a beautiful day though – sunny and in the 60s – so I headed off with a big group towards fresh pond and trying to feel optimistic.

We started out really easy, which was good for me. I ran up at the front of a pack and for the first time in a while felt pretty decent from the get-go – no limping and no pain in the foot/calf. I ran with Kyle and Brunk up at the front for a while. We maintained a pretty good group until we got to fresh pond. At that point, we started to break up as the front picked up the pace a bit and some people hung off the back. I stayed up front with Kyle, Brunk, and Broc and we headed out of Fresh Pond and up towards the river.

We were cruising pretty well along the river. It was a bit faster than I’d planned on going, but I was feeling pretty decent for the first time in a while, so I hung with them. At that point, the group was me, kyle, brunk, broc, and benji. We all stayed together at a pretty good clip until we turned to Harvard. At that point, we were still accelerating, and I decided I’d had enough and should back off. I let them go for a few minutes, but then saw Benji and Broc coming back, so I caught up to them. They’d also decided to let Kyle and Brunk go and so the three of us ran back at a more reasonable pace for the last few miles.

It was a nice conversational run for the last 20 minutes or so. I tacked on a bit of extra distance on the grass once we got back and then took my shoes off and did FULL-full foot drills. Everything felt pretty good and I was feeling pretty optimistic.

The total run was 80:24 for 12M. We were probably running low 6min pace for a while there between fresh pond and Harvard.

Friday, April 15, 2011 – AM: I woke up this morning with my calf again too stiff to run on. I walked on a bit and then had some breakfast and took some advil. I don’t even think the advil necessarily did that much, I think it was just the walking around on a bit, because after breakfast I felt pretty much fine and ready to go. I waited a bit, to let myself digest, and first did some good core – 100s, 50s, 30x side dip, 50x cherry picker, 30x toes to sky, 6:00 plank, 30x flutter kick, 50x leg lift.

AM2: After doing core, I put on my shoes and headed out for a nice easy run. I ran down to Lakes and looped around there and then came back the same way. I tacked on a loop around the horn and then back to Lewis. I felt fine, a bit tired, but okay.

The total run was 43:00 for ~5.5M.

PM: I went and saw the trainer before practice and got her to rub my calf a bit and check it out. She didn’t seem concerned which made me feel a bit better. After this, I jogged over to practice and headed out for an easy run with Murner, and a bunch of guys doing a pre-race shakeout. We ran on lakes again – a bit boring, but oh well. I tacked on a bit extra with Murner and then headed back to Baronian to do drills. I did Full-full footdrills again and it all felt pretty solid.

I borrowed Jerzy’s spikes after this because I decided to try and do a few strides. I ended up doing 4 with Matt, Sam, and Brosh. They felt a bit awkward; I didn’t quite feel like I had my top gear (or even top couple gears), but it’s the first quicker running I’ve done in a couple days, so kind of to be expected.

Finally, I spent a while stretching and rolling. I’m pretty tight in both my calves and my hips, so I’m trying to keep that under control. I’m feeling pretty decent going into tomorrow. I really hope it goes well. I’d like to feel good on a workout day for once!

The total run was 48:07 for ~6.5M.

Saturday, April 16, 2011 - AM: I slept pretty well last night and woke up naturally around 8:30am. My calf was feeling a lot better than it has in the morning, which made me feel pretty good. I did a bit of work and then did core (light) – 100s, 50s, 20x side dip, 50x cherry pickers, 20x superman, 30x leg lift. After this, I headed to breakfast before going over to watch the meet.

PM: I spent most of the day at the meet, which was pretty cold and windy. I was glad I went, though. I got a lot of work done before I left, so I felt fine about spending most of the day being social.

I left after the 800m race and got a ride back to campus from my parents, who were in the city. I got back a bit before 3pm and headed out to warm up from Lewis. Honestly, I had pretty low expectations going into this workout. After talking to Jon, he had warned me to “not expect to feel good for a few days.” Still, I really wanted to feel good in a workout, as I really haven’t felt 100% since Princeton.

Anyways, my warm-up actually felt pretty good. My calve had been bugging me a bit during the day, but once I started jogging on it, I didn’t notice it at all. I did ~20 minutes out and back from Lewis and then grabbed my shoes and headed over to Gantcher. I got there and finished warming up and then switched into my Tumbes spikes and did full foot drills on the indoor track. I was doing the workout inside mostly because of the wind. There were close to 20MPH winds outside, and I didn’t feel like running a hard 800m by myself on windy Baronian. So, I chose Gantcher.

After drills, I did strides. I tried to make them a bit harder than I usually do before a workout to try to get my body really used to running that fast pace. Instead of just jogging 100m back, I took a full 2:00 walking/jogging rest between each stride. This felt really long, but I think it allowed me to go a little faster. I did 4x strides and then did 200m in about 32. I took another 2 minutes after this and then started the workout.

The workout was: 800m hard, 75 seconds rest, 2x400m hard w/ 75 sec rest, 3-4 min rest, 5M Tempo. This is probably the big-volume, hard workout that I will do.

The 800m felt fast from the start. I wanted to run the first 200m controlled and I was amazed how fast a 32.x felt. I slowed down a lot on the second lap and ran a 34 and then tried to pick it up on the last two. I managed to negative split – which I’ve heard is not actually the most efficient way to run an 800m. For me, it was pretty good though. I was working very hard the last 100-150m and still only ran 32.9. Still, it was negative split (67.0, 66.8) for a 2:13.8 (PR). My previous best was only a 2:16 or 17 from a workout during cross.

The rest felt quite short after this and the next two quarters felt very hard from the start. My legs felt really heavy and I was working pretty hard to get them moving. I was a bit disappointed to only run 67.3 for the first, but I got under 67 for the second which is not too bad for me.

After the quarters, I changed shoes into my Bear flats (new asics piranhas) and jogged into the gym to do the tempo on the dread-mill. I don’t normally like doing runs on the treadmill, but today it seemed to make the most sense. I wanted a bit of help with pacing and it was really windy outside and I didn’t feel like running 40 laps of Gantcher. So, this was pretty much my last resort.

I started off at 5:24 pace and upped the pace every half mile until I was running 5:15 pace. This started to feel pretty fast, so I maintained this speed until about 3.5M. At that point, I started to try to really change gears again. I was running close to 5:00 pace by the time I got to 4M in 21:03. I tried to maintain 5:00 pace for the last mile but it felt a bit too hard for a workout, so I slowed a bit in the middle and then kicked it back in. I was almost under 5:00 anyways with a 5:00.6 last mile to bring me to 26:04.1 for 5M.

I was very spent after this workout. It was one of the harder efforts I’ve put out in a while. The fast stuff at the beginning really built up the lactic acid in my legs and I really felt that by the end of the tempo. Still, the pace progressed down ever mile. I ran the last 2M in 10:10 and the last 5k in 15:56. This workout makes me feel pretty confident about my fitness. I think I can safely say that I’m in better shape than during cross, as I ran an 8km tempo near the end of the season at 25:58 and didn’t have a split mile right before-hand. I am just hoping that it wasn’t too much of an effort. I’d like to continue feeling good for next weekend and then NESCACs.

Anyways, after the workout, I did a short cool-down back to Lewis, stretched and rolled a bit, and then tacked on another couple miles before heading to Dewick for dinner. The total for the day was 15M+/-.

3M Cool down

Sunday, April 17, 2011 – AM: I slept really poorly last night. I ended up going over to Sam’s suite in Latin way with all the other sophomores in the evening. It was pretty fun, but I was still pretty spent from the workout, so I only stayed until about 10:30pm and then headed back to Lewis as everyone else left for Brom. There was no way I had another hour or two of being awake and social in me.

I came back and was in bed by 11pm, but could not fall asleep for what seemed like a very long time. My stomach had not felt quite right since after my workout and I think that was bothering me. I felt bloated, but at the same time hungry. It was like my tummy was full volume-wise, but I was still hungry.

I got to sleep at some point and woke up naturally around 7:30am. I laid in bed resting until just before 8:30am and then got up. I had a small breakfast – a pear and a granola bar – and then got a bit of work done before long run. At 9:30am, I jogged down to the track and ran about 2M easy around the grass before everyone got here. My calf was a bit stiff and I wanted to try to warm it up. This was the first time that I’d really tried to run anything significant in the morning and I hadn’t taken any advil, so I wanted to be careful. I was limping a bit at first, but started to feel better once I warmed up. I rolled and stretched a bunch after these first couple miles and then left in a big group towards the river.

It was a pretty nice day out - ~60F and sunny when we started. It was very windy, though, which made it feel a bit cooler. I started out running with Brunk in front of the main pack but he picked it up to go chase down Nick and Kyle, so I decided to drop back and run with everyone else instead of sticking by myself.

We got to the river and headed down towards Boston. It was nice having a pack to break the wind; I was glad I’d held back with them. It was also nice just to have company on an easier long run like this. I feel like I would have just been really bored had I been alone because I didn’t want to run super hard. It was a nice conversational run and was actually quite fun.

The high point of the run was when we passed a group of very fast looking Ethiopians going the opposite direction along the river. Sam, Luke, Brosh, and I quickly turned around and ran after them and started talking to them. One of them spoke pretty decent English, who turned out to be 2:07 marathoner Bekana Daba. We talked to the three of them for a bit who were doing “40 minutes easy” – probably around 6:45-60 pace. We left them in peace after a few minutes, but it was still pretty cool.

We later found out that the other two runners were Abraham Cherkos (12:54, 61:42, 2:07:29) and Tadese Tola (59:49, 2:06:31). Pretty esteemed company

After that, we looped around by BU and crossed the river, heading back along mem drive to Harvard and then back to Tufts. I was feeling pretty tired the whole run, so I was glad not to push it too hard today. We got back and I tacked on 3 or 4 more miles to round it up to 16M total. My calves were both pretty sore by the end. I definitely felt yesterday’s workout. I didn’t want to over-do it today and dig myself in a hole again.

Once I got back to the track, I spent a while rolling out my legs and doing some static stretching. I did some light foot drills (the first half, less dynamic ones), but didn’t want to do all of the more jumpy-boundy ones because I thought that would put a bit more strain on my calves than I wanted. It was starting to cool off, so I decided to head over to Dewick for Sunday brunch.

The total run was 1:52:38 for 16M, plus some drills.

PM: After dinner, I walked over to Anderson to get some work done on the EMID project. It was relatively productive, except that I sliced my finger open with a pair of scissors. Ouch!

After this, I walked over to Gantcher to do an easy XT shakeout. I hopped on one of the bikes next to the track and did 40min at a pretty easy. I was feeling a bit stiff, so this was a nice way to just loosen up.

The total was XT40min on stationary bike.

PM2: After the bike, I did Core – 100s, 50s, 30x side dip, 30x bird dog, 30x flutter kick, 50x cherry pickers, 30x toes to sky, 50x leg lift. It felt pretty solid. I walked back to Dewick afterwards and got a snack before an early bed-time.

Total for the week: 94 Miles in 10 Runs

Monday, April 11, 2011

Week of April 4, 2011

Monday, April 04, 2011 – AM: I woke up and my left calve was pretty sore. I ran over to Alumni fields and it took me a few minutes before I could run without a kink in my stride. It was a bit worrisome, but seemed to work itself out after a few minutes. By the end, it was much better.

The total run was 5M s/o in 39:49 on fields

AM2: Phase IV lift in Gantcher.

PM: The weather was miserable this afternoon – 40s and hard rain. I arrived in Gantcher ready to run outside but everyone else was in shorts and shirtless and starting to run around the indoor track. I chuckled a bit at the fact that we were running inside in April, but oh well. I ran with Murner and felt fine. We switched directions every 20 minutes or so. At one point we tried to go down and run in the cage for a change of scenery, but the softball girls were down there and we didn’t feel like getting hit with speeding projectiles.

I did a few laps in lane one to see how fast we were going (just under 7:00 pace for the majority).

The total run was 9M EZ in 63:30.

Tuesday, April 5, 2011 – AM: I woke up this morning feeling very stiff and tired. I had gotten up to pee in the night and had a lot of soreness in my left calve – on the outside, along the tendon that runs parallel to the shin. It was pretty stiff and sore when I woke up and it took me a few minutes to be able to run without favoring it. I jogged down to the track and ran around the grass to shake out. It felt okay by the end, but boy was it stiff at first… A pretty nice morning other than that. Almost 60F and clear.

The total run was 4M s/o in 32:33.

PM: I had an exam this morning but was able to rest a bit after lunch. The weather looked nasty for the afternoon – rainy, windy, and in the mid 40s. I saw that there was a break in the storm front coming through around 2:30pm, so I decided to start my run early in hopes of getting in a few miles before it got too nasty.

It’s hard weather to dress for, but this ended up working pretty well: I wore my thinnest tights, a spandex top and my rain coat, with a wool hat and warm gloves. I ran to Gantcher to drop my stuff off and then did another 2M+ solo down towards the fells and back on Boston Ave. I had done about 24min of running by the time I got back to Gantcher around 3:05pm and met up with the guys to head out. Matt wanted to do about 7M, so I figured that would put me in the 10M+ range, which was where I wanted to be.

On the way out, Nick said to me “you know you’re going to be really hot in that, right?” I actually had been pretty warm the first few miles, but I didn’t mind being a little over-heated. However, as we headed out, the temperature seemed to drop and the rain seemed to pick up. Matty and I ran across campus and out toward Arlington to do Spy Pond. It was raining pretty hard by the time we got to Teele Square and it was quite chilly. I was almost cold in my raincoat and tights and poor Matt was in a t-shirt and shorts.

Before we got to Mass Ave, Matt said “I’m not going to make it – I’ve gotta head back.” At first, I thought he meant he just wasn’t feeling well. It was loud and he said something about being sick. It turns out he was just too cold and didn’t want to stay out since he was already coming down with something – definitely a wise call. So, we headed back to campus so he could get a coat. By the time we got to Anderson, it was really coming down and he told me he was just going to finish up inside. I figured since I was already out here and wet, I might as well finish up outside. (Plus, I was really not excited about two days of Gantcher miles in a row).

At this point, we’d run about 45 minutes, so I figured 3M on C-Loop would bring it up to 9M. I got back to Gantcher in ~64 minutes, came inside, and took off all my wet stuff. Luckily, I had stashed some dry socks and shirt inside before practice.

I did full-full barefoot drills on the blue mats – these felt pretty solid. Afterwards, I put on my tumbes spikes and did some strides.

I did the first 3x by myself and did 100m on/100m off. After this, I joined Sam Haney and Connor on theirs. It was nice to have company on my strides and I was actually feeling really good by the end. This was the first day since Princeton that I’ve felt like I’ve had some snappiness back in my legs. I think it’s good that we bumped the workout to tomorrow though. I should be feeling decent by then.

Anyways, I rolled out and stretched a bit. My calve that had bugged me this morning didn’t bother me at all during the run. I still rolled/massaged it a bunch after practice to be safe. Finally, I put my (soggy wet) trainers back on and jogged back to Lewis with Sam before dinner.

The total run was 10M+++ EZ/Mod in 74:26 (~6:40 pace for most) w/ full drills and 8x good strides in Tumbes.

PM2: After Alpinismo and some studying, at 8:30pm I did Core – 100s, 50s, 30x side dip, 100x squiggle, 30x reach up, 30x toes to sky, 4:30 plank, 50x leg lift. Felt good. The plank is a good place to practice mental toughness.

Wednesday, April 6, 2011 - AM: I woke up naturally a bit before 8:00am this morning. My calve was bugging me a bit as I got up and walked around on it. It seems to be that it gets stiff after I sleep on it, as it’s really only bothered me in the mornings. I did a bit of jogging around Lewis, just to try to loosen it up a bit. I could tell that even after a few minutes of jogging it was starting to feel better. After this, I did some foot drills – not the latter half very dynamic ones – and then jogged over to breakfast.

PM: Our workout got changed at the last minute today. Originally, we were going to run 3x3x800m with short rest, but instead we were now running 2x5x600m with 60 sec rest and 3:30 between sets. At first, I was kind of frustrated at the short intervals and the short overall volume, but it ended up being a tougher workout than it looked on paper.

I jogged over to the track after class and did a nice easy warm-up by myself. It was pretty nice out, with temperatures around 50-55F, but clouds were moving in and it was VERY windy (15-20MPH steady) along the home straight. I warmed up for about 30 minutes and came back and switched into my Tumbes spikes. I want to work on staying up on my toes and making my calves stronger, so I’m going to try to do most of my VO2 work in spikes from here on.

I did half-rep drills and only a couple strides since everyone else were ready to go already. I was supposed to be running with Nick and we were aiming for 71.x (1:46.5-1:48). Matt was also running with us but he was shooting for 70s.

These felt pretty fast from the get-go. I’m not sure if it’s the lack of work at this pace or if I’m just not quite as well recovered as I thought I was, but it felt pretty lousy out there today. Nick was trying hard to stick with Matty and I was trying hard to stick on Nick, but a lot of the time this meant we would go out in like 33.x and I would feel that by 400m and fall off. The first 3 were okay – definitely felt tougher than I expected, but not too bad. When I ran 1:51 on the 4th, I was a bit frustrated and I think I lost it for a bit mentally.

I was also a bit pissed off because after that rep, Nick and Matt just took off on the next one without me. I had just spaced out a bit and missed the 60 second mark and so I ended up doing #5 solo.

I tried to stay a bit more in the game on the second 5. I tried to focus on tucking in behind Nick and trying to draft for as long as I could. The wind made it really brutal – especially since we had to run into the wind twice on half of them.

Anyways, I kept it under control. I ran 1:51 again on the second #4 which was frustrating, but I came back and ran 1:48 for the next one. (NB – thinking about it now, both 1:51s were on the stretch where we were into the wind twice, so that actually makes me feel a lot better about the effort).

After the 10x600m, we took 3:00 easy jog and then did 3x200m. I ran the first one solo in 30.9, took 2:00 easy jog, and then ran the second one with Nick in 29.7. I did one more, hoping to run a bit faster and ran 30.7 solo and called it a day.

I did a 3M cool-down afterwards, starting out with the 4:30 group while they were warming up and then finished solo. I felt pretty decent, but my calves were quite sore afterwards. Some stretching and rolling and then off to Dewick.

All in all, it was a mediocre workout. I averaged 1:48.3 for the 10x600m, which is a bit slower than I’d hoped for, and it felt harder than I wanted it to. The workout didn’t look too hard on paper, but the very short rest and the wind made it tough. I also just felt like I haven’t worked out at this pace much (at all) recently. Most of my VO2 workouts have been more like 73s, not 71s, so it was a bit of a shock to the system running that quick. My legs also just didn’t quite feel 100% today.

I’m not worried at this point, but it definitely makes running 14:5x or 15:0x seem pretty intimidating right now. I’m hoping that a couple more good workouts at this pace will help make it seem more reasonable.

Thursday, April 07, 2011 – AM: I woke up this morning and my calve was pretty tight and stiff again. It took a good 5 minutes of warming up before I could really run on it without a serious kink in my stride. I jogged over to the alumni fields and ran around there for a while. It did loosen up and felt a lot better by the end, but was still not quite right. I did 3 big laps on the grass and then headed inside to lift. After this, I jogged back to Lewis before some quality time with the roller and some good static stretching.

The total run was 4M s/o in 33:03.

AM2: In Gantcher, I did the Phase IV Lift, mostly on the varsity side of the gym. Everything felt good. The calve felt better afterwards. The lift was 3 sets of[dips (30-35), 10x seated row @40lb, 10x push up, 7x chin up, 8x RDL each foot, 8x quad extension @80lb, 15-20x side crunches, 15-20x shooters, 15-20x suitcases, 20x lunge walk].

PM: I had lab this afternoon and I was hoping that Murner would wait for me to run. We had talked about running ~12M together and I was hoping I’d have some company. He texted me and told me that he was going at 3:00, though, and I was still in lab, so I ended up goin’ solo.

I was feeling pretty tired when I left lab. Having to stand up for 2+ hours is not great right before a run. Anyways, I was thinking of canning the longer run and the quicker end I had thought of as I headed out. I figured I would run to the river and see how I felt from there. If I felt really terrible, I’d just run 6-8M and call it a recovery day. If I felt really good, I’d do what I’d originally intended - ~12M w/ some quicker running at the end.

I felt pretty lousy the first couple of miles. My stride still wasn’t perfect and I was still not landing quite right on my left leg. As I progressed though, I tried to relax and once I got into it, I actually started to feel pretty decent and smooth. The first 3M down to the river were about 6:55 pace and I then picked it up a bit to ~6:45 for the next few miles.

I crossed the bridge at Mass Ave and came back on the Cambridge side. I felt pretty good at this point and just tried to feel relaxed. For the second half of the run, I averaged about 6:30 pace and it felt quite comfortable.

I came back the long way from Harvard and got back to the track in 1:17:12. At this point, I was feeling decent enough that I decided I might as well try to the quicker ending I had planned and see how the pace felt. I took about 60 seconds to change into my Peer flats and then started on the track.

I ran the first 200m ~38 and it felt a lot easier than I had expected. I slowed down to the pace I wanted to hit (80s) and was very consistent for the remainder of the run. Every lap was 79.h or 80.l. It felt quite comfortable too. I kept this up for 4000m, running the last lap more like 10k effort in 75.5. This ended up coming out to 13:15.5 for 4000m and felt quite comfortable – exactly what I was hoping for.

I jogged one more easy mile after this to cool down a bit and then rolled and stretched a bit. I had to leave pretty quickly because it was like 5:45pm by the time I finished running and I had class at 6:00pm. I scarfed down a bagel and some Gatorade on the way to class and didn’t get to eat dinner until like 7:30pm. Long day!

The total run was 1:37:00 for 15M, 6:28 pace. The 4000m of work at the end was 13:15.5 (5:19.9 pace)

11.5M 1:17:12

Friday, April 08, 2011 – AM: I went to bed at 10pm last night and pulled my shade down, so I managed to sleep until after 8:30am. Once up, I was glad to find my calve was not as sore as it’s been the last couple of mornings. I texted Prescott that I was up and would meet him at his house for a shakeout.

The weather said it was 41F out, so I wore underarmor top, a tech shirt, and yellow wind breaker with medium tights and a hat and mittens. It ended up feeling a lot warmer than that because it was really sunny, so I ended up ditching the wind-breaker at Prescott’s house.

The first couple minutes were still a bit stiff and awkward, but I felt pretty much fine after 5 minutes or so. Much better than yesterday.

Prescott and I had a nice easy run around C-Loop; it was nice to have company on a morning run. When we were on the other side of campus, near that school by Curtis street, we ran into J-Rags and so we all teamed up for the remainder of the run. It was fun and good to catch up with Jeff. We ran Prescott back to his house and the I ran Jeff back to Ossipee. From there, I tacked on another loop around the horn and came back to Lewis.

The total run was 46:14 for just under 6M.

PM: I headed out towards the Fells with Nick and Brunk. I ran with them for a few miles but once we got into the Fells, I really had to take a piss, so I stopped and they went off without waiting. I was okay with this, though, as it was a nice day to run alone in the Fells. The calve was still not perfect and I could still feel a bit of a kink in my stride.

Afterwards, I tacked on some running on the grass around the infield and then did full foot drills in socks. I felt better by the end, but still not perfect.

The total run was 8M++ in 65:57, with drills

PM2: Core – 100s, 50s, 30x side dip, 30x cherry pickers, 30x toes to sky, 5:00 plank, 30x Kenyan, 50x leg lift

Saturday, April 9, 2011 – AM: I had trouble falling asleep last night. I think I need to stop doing core so close to bed-time; it seems to keep my heart rate up and makes it difficult to fall asleep. That and the fact that it’s Friday night and there’s a good amount of noise to deal with. Anyways, once I fell asleep, I slept alright. I woke up naturally around 7:20am and tried to stay asleep until 8:30 or so.

At that point, I got up and my left calve was pretty sore again. I did a bit of light jogging to warm it up and then did FULL full foot-drills in the grass outside of Lewis. It felt a lot better by the end but was still a bit tweaked. Afterwards, I jogged over to Dewick for breakfast.

PM: I had a pretty frustrating day. I had to spend most of the day in Anderson fixing shit that was someone else’s job and that I don’t really know how to do. Argh. I met up with my parents briefly to drop off some shoes that I accidentally had shipped to the house. After this, I found I was really tired and took a nice nap for a half hour or so. I then did some work on my EMID write-up and headed out to do my workout around 4pm.

I jogged down to Baronian to drop off my flats and bottle and then headed over to Alumni fields to warm up on the grass. I was actually feeling pretty decent. My stride felt almost 100% and I felt pretty good in terms of energy. I did about 4M total back to the track and then did half-rep foot drills on the grass (in socks). I then changed into my Peer flats, did 4x 100m strides and got ready to go.

The original workout I had in mind for today was a pretty tough one: 2x5000m@tempo, 1x3200m @10k with the rest being 600m run at easy pace (~7:00). This would end up being 9M total including the rest. I was hoping that the 2M at the end would simulate the last 2M of a 10k and trying to stay tough when already pretty tired. Dan had assigned us a simple 6M steady tempo, but I thought this workout might be better suited for me.

Things started off fine. I was hoping to run the first 5k pretty comfortably at half marathon pace (80s) and then run the second one a bit quicker (78-79) and finally run the last 2M at 75-76s. I went out and ran 79.1, 78.7 for the first two laps and it didn’t feel too bad. The wind had picked up a bit and there was a pretty solid headwind on the home stretch. As the laps progressed, I found myself consistently slowing down on the home stretch.

The first mile felt pretty good and I ran 5:18.5. After that, though, things started to go downhill quickly. The next mile I was hitting 80-81 and then the wheels really started to fall off. The third mile, I was running 83-84s and it felt pretty hard. This was pretty embarrassing and I kind of lost it here mentally.

I actually managed to bring the pace back down a bit in the 4th mile, but it didn’t last. I was working way harder than it felt and by the time I got to the 5th mile and was running 85s, I decided to stop.

I jogged one lap easily and then tried to run a mile at 10k pace. I came through 200m in 37-38 and it felt really hard. I came through 400m in 77-78 and decided to stop. I really hate cutting workouts and runs in general and in the few years I’ve been a runner, there haven’t been many times that I’ve done this. However, when it comes down to getting another mile or so of lousy quality in or not, in a situation like this, I think the wise move is to cut short. If I’m running this slowly, there is an underlying reason for it, generally that my body is not ready to work out and I’m not recovered from the previous session(s). Thus, working extra hard to push out one more (slow) mile is entirely counter-productive, setting myself back farther. The real problem is that I came into the workout without being properly recovered. This is probably why I rarely have to cut workouts – because I try to take my recovery very seriously and I almost never start a workout that I don’t think I can finish.

Anyways, I was very frustrated, but it was a beautiful day, so I tried to make the best of it. I did a nice easy cool-down on Lakes and that felt nice.

4M Cool down

Sunday, April 10, 2011 – AM: I went home last night to try to get a good night’s sleep and to do my long run with Mr. C in the morning. I woke up feeling pretty lousy – I still didn’t sleep too well. I had some breakfast and my calve was still pretty sore when I woke up. I did a bit of jogging around the house and then tried to warm it up on the elliptical for about 10 minutes. After this, I headed outside to see if it would feel better after a couple easy miles. I ran for about 3M out and back and there was still a slight kink my stride. I came back and after a lot of hemming and hawing, I decided not to try to do a long run in the morning, but to rest it and wait until the afternoon when I’ve generally felt better. Instead, I just got a bunch of work done.

PM: Around 2:00pm, I headed out with Mr. C to do an easy shakeout. After talking with Nick, I had decided not to attempt a long run, but to just get some easy running in if I felt good. I was feeling goodb at this point, with no limping, so I decided to go out and test it out.

I started out with a couple of miles very easy with Mr. C on foot (~9:00 pace or something). After that, we looped back to the house and he got on the bike and we did another 45 minutes or so at an easy-moderate pace. I ran without a watch, but had a general idea of how far we were going.

The total run was ~10M in 70-80 minutes.

PM2: Before dinner, around 5pm, I did core – 100s, 50s, 30x bird dog, 30x toes to sky, 30x calve raises, 30x side dip, 5:30 plank, 50x leg lift. I did 12minutes on the elliptical to warm up and 18min after to cool down. Feeling better.
