A Quick Update

We´ve made it to Bolivia and have been exploring the high mountain cities and towns for the last week or so. For both of us, this is new territory. Having never been to this country, as soon as we boarded the international bus to Copacabana, on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca, I was in a totally new place.

A few things took a bit of getting used to - the high altitude, for one. La Paz, the city that has been our home base, sits at 3800m above sea level. Just walking around the hilly city can take your breath away. The food has also taken a bit of getting used to, as both Sam and I have spent a couple of days sick.

For the most part, though, Bolivia has been a wonderful, unspoiled place to travel. The people are genuine and open and unbelievably friendly and hospitable.

We spent the last two days hiking in a very remote area outside of La Paz, starting in the very high Andes (a pass at about 5000m or 16,000 ft) and finished in the deep jungle, passing through an immense array of ecosystems. On the way, we passed through tiny mountain and jungle villages full of humble people who mostly lived off of the land. They were always friendly and welcoming and willing to offer us a shady spot to rest.

Now, we are about to board a bus to Ororu, a town a few hours away, where we can catch an overnight train to the Southern part of the country, where we will spend a few days exploring the desolate expanses down there. A few road blocks have been reported due to some protesting, but we're keeping our fingers crossed that we can get through.

That's all for now!
